I am glad that the coverage and profile is being raised. I have worke din the area of trauma and abuse for 5 years now and sadly it often gets swept under the carpet because it is “too confronting” for the general public. It SHOULD be confronting and it should be spoken about. Many children and youth are too afraid to disclose that they have been abused because of the reactions that they receive when they tell their stories. Sadly child abuse is all too common so the more people know about it, the more the community is aware and the more of a surveillance type culture we create. The sad reality is that there is no specific socio-economic group or racial group where it is more prevalent- some communities are just a lot better at hiding it. The other harsh reality is that child abuse is very rarely perpetrated by strangers. The majority of abuse is perpetrates by someone the child know.

So now I will stop the heavy stuff!
