I’ve never tried acrylics (too many horror stories). I’ve tried gel- it was okay, it chipped after a week and then it was all down hill as they’d start cracking and I could easily chip/peel it all away. I love shellac – lasted a month, couldn’t get it off my nails without going back to the salon.

I tend to pick my nail polish off…it’s a horrible habbit, but shellac wasn’t possible to peel off!!!

I regulary get pink and whites (acrylics).. they are a bit more expensive but I love them.  My nails break so frequently and I hate what nail polish looks like when it chips so acrylic it is

I’ve had all three. I got gel a couple of months ago and I loved the way it made my nails looks. However about a week later the polish was peeling off. Like literally it came off in one piece. So I went to get shellac for the wedding. I told the nail tech that nail polish easily peels off of my nails. She put an extra coat of alcohol on my nails to dry out the beds. It didn’t help thought because the shellac peeled about a week later. The only good think about acrylics is that the polish won’t wear off. I hate acrylic though. I hate getting crap stuck in my nails. I also think they look super unnatural. Good luck! Wish I was more help

@winerygirl: I used to get acrylic because my nails peel/break so easily. But I’ve been doing Shellac for the past 10 months or so and I love it. The polish stays on for about 2-3 weeks (unless you’re really rough on your nails) and it makes them harder as well so mine don’t break as easily.  It’s your natural nail so it looks natural and I’d think it’s a lot better for your nails because they aren’t buffing them down. Good luck!

I’m guilty of acrylics. I love the way they look and they last for a very long time. I can go about 2 1/2 – 3 weeks before getting them filled (that’s where they buff them down and add more acrylic where your nail has grown out at the bottom). They do wreck your natural nails. I had them on continuously for about 9 months and when I took them off my nails were paper thin. It took months for them to return to normal and it sucked.

I’ve gotten acrylics before but they look so horrible on my tiny nails.  I’ve been getting the gel manicures for over a year and I think they are great….depending on:

1) the person who does your nails

2) the brand of gel you use

My salon only had the OPI for the longest time, but recently they got a new brand (can’t remember the name, getting a mani today so can check back in here) and it lasts FOREVER – it does not peel off until maybe 3 weeks out, and by then my nails have grown so much I need a new one anyway.

There are also a few people at my salon who don’t do a good job and the polish is more likely to peel off faster.  There is 1 girl who I really like so now I make sure to get her when I go.
