A corset is definitely functional – it will keep the lines of your dress long and lean.

A good seamstress should be able to add a corset to your dress.  Do you want the corset to show in the back of the dress, or did you want it just to help hold things in place?

Some of the dresses I tried on had two wide pieces of fabric that were on each side seem of the dress.  They had a hook and eye closure in several rows along the side, kind of like a bra clasp.  Is this what you mean?  I think that would be easy to sew into a dress since it’s not too invasive and lays flat against the zipper.  I real corset with the criss-cross ribbon looping would add too much bulk inside of the dress, but if this is the look you like on the outside you could replace the zipper with visible corseting in the back.  If your dress is snug enough already but you just want to redistribute some flesh around to make your waist look thinner you could wear something like this: http://www.victoriassecret.com/ss/Satellite?ProductID=1265362095777&c=Page&cid=1289998270442&pagename=vsdWrapper

It would probably be cheaper than paying a seamstress to alter your dress.
