It depends how much your dress needs to be hemmed, is it strapless or does it already have straps that you want to attach the sleeves to? Have you considered a bolero? I ordered an extra yard of material with my dress and am getting a bolero made.

I would suggest taking it to your seamstress. A good seamstress will most definetly be able to add sleeves, my sister had thick straps added to her dress and they looked like they belonged to the dress. You might have to find a matching material if there is not enough from the hem, but the seamstress will be able to tell you that. Hope this helps and best wishes with your planning! 🙂

I hate to be a downer, but if you’re only having it hemmed 2-3 inches, you won’t have enough fabric to make a cap sleeve.

Do you want a strap or a cap sleeve?  You would definitely have enough for a strap.  With the way a sleeve is constructed you have to account for more width in the center where it falls over the shoulder plus having enough fabric for finishing the edges.  I’m sure you’ll have plenty enough length, but not enough width.  Just estimating on my own shoulder I would say you need 4 inches at the very least.  Sorry.

@slumbach:The seamstress who is doing your alterations should also be able to put the sleeves on for you. Is this what you are thinking of?

This is what I’m having done, so it can definitely happen.  I would just talk to your seamstress about what she/he can do.

I should note that I’m having the train removed, so I have the extra fabric to play with.  Is this an option for you?

@slumbach:I have seen it done before! If you do not have enough material from the hem you should be able to match some to your dress, it may not be exactly the same material but as long as it’s the same color no one will ever know!

I’m considering adding cap sleeves to my strapless dress, too. I ordered extra fabric (lace) from my dress to give myself the option (I won’t be having the dress hemmed).  But I think 3 inches off the bottom of your dress might be enough to make the sleeves.  2 inches sounds like it might not be.  In any event, if the amount hemmed off the bottom is not sufficient, you might be able to find fabric that is a close enough match to the material of the dress and use that.
