My final deposit for the caterer is due Friday. I was planning to go to the post office today on my lunch break to mail it down, check is already written/sealed up. I open my email this morning and its a note from the caterer with a NEW invoice, saying, “I am attaching a current invoice…unfortunately the sales tax has increased by 1%” Now I understand that they can’t control taxes and that its ONLY 1% but this pisses me off. All the money I’m paying them and they couldn’t tell me this earlier? They couldn’t just eat the cost?! Now this means I can’t send the check today because I won’t have time to run home to get a new check before the post office closes. It’s just really frustrating…

I know that my caterer states the “pre-tax” price. They explained to me that they’ve had instances where the county/state changes the tax rate and it increases catering costs.

Yeah…I’m gonna be in the same spot. My state just increased sales tax…

As a vendor, I’m required to collect the current tax rate at the time payment is collected. So yeah, it stinks, but it’s not unheard of.

That happened to me here in Ontario, Canada with the onset of the HST. Most things included both taxes anyways, but there were a couple things that didn’t and their prices went up. (Can’t remember what they were though).
One of my vendors just ate the difference because she said it wasn’t fair to us.
