I am going a bit more casual on the Save-The-Date Cards but if you want them to be formal they can be!

Since STD’s are more informal I think if you want to do The Smith Family, go for it.  I did Mr and Mrs John Smith on mine but that was just what I chose.

One thing I might use to make my decision would be: *will* the entire smith family be invited? Let’s say that the Smiths consist of 2 adults and 3 children. If your wedding’s going to be adults-only, you should probably  address it to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. But if “The Smith Family” encompasses everyone you intend to invite to your wedding, go for it!

I did the whole “The Smith Family” or “John Smith” as opposed to “Jonathan Smith” for our save the dates. MaryJane makes a very good point though!

I’ve always been under the impression that they were supposed to be casual.

Good point, MJ!  Figure that out now, and then I’d say you can totally opt for a more casual address line to whomever will be invited to the wedding!

We actually did both… Mr. addressed his side and I did mine. I did mine more casual, “Bob and Carla Smith” or if there were kids, “Bob and Carla Smith” (and then on the next line), “Jack, Jill, and Katie”. He did his slightly more formal, “Mr. Bob and Mrs. Carla Smith”. *shrug*

This is one of those details that I can’t let myself stress over too much.

I would lean towards formal – not because Save-The-Date Cards have to be formal, but if you’re using a spreadsheet to create mailing labels for both your Save-The-Date Cards and invitations, it may be easier to create only one address style.  Therefore, no need to go back through your addresses to formalize them when it’s time to send out your invites!
