Children actually should not be mentioned on the outer envelope, only the inner envelope. Your outer envelope should read:

Ms. Sally Jones

123 Main Street

City, State 12345

The inner envelope would read:

Ms. Jones (with no first name)

Miss Susan Jones

The way to handle the guest would be to call Ms. Jones and ask her if there is anyone she would like to invite as a guest and to obtain that person’s name and address and send him or her an individual invitation.

ETA: I saw that you are not planning to use inner envelopes. In that case, I would probably call Ms. Jones to tell her that her daughter is invited and also to inquire regarding the name and address of the potential additional guest.

I didn’t have inner envelopes, so I did what you are planning to do. Parents on top line and kids on the line below.

I think it worked out well for us so there was no confusion about who was invited!

I added the “we have reserved XX seats in your honour” wording on my invites so that people know exactly how many places they have at the wedding.

what you have with ‘and Miss Susan’ is perfect. Clears the ‘Guest Miss Susan’ thing right up 🙂
