What are the edits? If you are trying to edit text, it’s not possible. A PDF is basically an image of a file. You’ll need the source file to make edits.

If it’s a document that needs an electronic signature, or you need to make notes, that’s possible.

You can’t edit a PDF. Acrobat is only for viewing and adding multimedia and other capabilities, but you can’t actually edit the PDF. You can edit a Word doc. but a PDF is…well, think of it like an image. Can’t be manipulated except for in ways a photo could be.

You can edit text in a PDF via Acrobat depending on what the source file was (before it became a PDF) and how it was saved.

For example, if you save a Word doc (or an InDesign file, etc) to PDF, there’s a “TouchUp Text” tool that allows you to actually remove and add text. Great for fixing typos and such that you find at the last-minute. (Tools > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Text Tool.) And prevents you from having to recreate the PDF and such.

If it’s something that was scanned to PDF, it’s possible that it saved as an image and not as text, in which case, you can add comments and strikethroughs and the like. (When people at my work scan things to PDF from the scanner, they don’t understand why it doesn’t always scan as text instead of an image.)

Does your assignment require you to get in there and change the actual text?

If it’s not too weird of me to offer, I’d be willing to poke around the document a bit too and see if I can figure anything out. 😉

You can edit a PDF at any time using Adobe LiveCycle.

@MrsDrRose612:  Yeah, you’d think the Word file would be adjusted instead of the PDF. That’s a little goofy. Usually you edit the source file unless you don’t have an editable source file. Can you accurately complete the assignment by adjusting the Word doc and saving the edited version to a PDF (hence resulting in an edited PDF)? Does that make sense? Just trying to think of workarounds. 🙂

@MrsDrRose612:  Yikes. I hear you. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Good luck!
