Hi! I know Illustrator but am unfamiliar with VistaPrint. Is it vistaprint that is giving you that message or illustrator?

Chances are that you will need to flatten your whole file to a JPG to upload to vistaprint, which will probably solve your problem.

If that doesn’t help, you can change your filetype from RGB>CMYK and visa versa in the illustrator program, but you should really change the images in programs like photoshop and relink them.

@Aisling10:  I think you should check and see what kind of files VistaPrint supports first. I know that most photo-printing sites only allow RGB files to be uploaded, in which case you should be ok.

If they allow CMYK and that is the platform you would like to use, then it might be a good idea to change them over in photoshop, and reimport them into the document.

But as I mentioned, once you flatten the file into a final JPG, you ahouldn’t get those error messages, and you should be a-ok for an upload to VisaPrint

Do you have photos in your illustrator document? Or just text and illustrations?

You can probably just File > Export. Change the “save as type” dropdown bar to jpg.

When the jpg options box pops up, make sure “color model” is CMYK. And resolution depth should be”high” or at least 300 dpi.

Then you can just upload your jpg to vistaprint.

I’ve never used Vistaprint but 99% of the printers I deal with want files in PDF format. If you want to save it as a PDF I would

1) Save another copy of the file first (you won’t be able to edit your text after you do step 2)

2) Select ALL of your text in the document and go to Type>Create Outlines.

3) Then save the document as a PDF.

The transparency issues can be a bit tricky because Illustrator is meant for vector/illustrations and not for photos…but if it looks ok on the PDF you should be fine.

Make sure you outline your fonts.  And you can save as JPG, just make sure it is 300 DPI minimum.

Also everything should be CMYK.  Just change it.

You can upload the .ai file into VP, which I find is better than the JPG.  But the JPG is okay if you have it high enough in res.

When I uploaded mine to vistaprint, it wouldn’t take my Illustrator file (too large) so I made a really high res PDF for it. Check that your illustrator file isn’t too big.

Do you have a copy of the photo you placed in Illustrator? If you do, just open it in photoshop and go to Image>Image Size and see what the resolution is. It should be 300 DPI.
