If you find a good class, it can be a heck of a workout! I take adult ballet a couple times a month and love it.  I’d do ballet over tap; the shoes are cheaper and it’s a better workout.  The tap is fun for me, but the ballet is about toning up, working on flexibility, and sweating off the pounds!

ETA: If you have a dance background, there are several DVDs out there that are quite good.  I’ve got a ballet bootcamp video that is both strenuous and enjoyable.  It’s a lot easier to fit a DVD into your schedule and the one-time cost is appealing!

I do ballet barre, so its not exactly the same as a regular adult ballet class, but its a great workout and I love it! Although its a time commitment, I think you should give it a shot, hopefully it will keep you motivated!

When I used to have time I did adult ballet and loved it. It’s an amazing work out.  Do you have any dance background?

i was a dancer, and i love both for different reasons. i have taken adult ballet classes since, and it was great for flexibility and toning but the class i took was too easy since i am in between the intermediate/advanced level and they only had a beginner/intermediate class that was primarily beginners.

i absolutely lovee tap classes and am planning on taking an adult tap class as well! it’s a ton of fun, but isn’t so much about flexibility- it’s more about rhythm. you definitely work up a sweat though, depending on the level of the class!

so i don’t think you can go wrong with either!! have fun!

Check your local YMCA. You can often find dance classes of all kinds for adults, at a fraction of the cost of taking a dance class from a dance studio, even without a Y membership, and at most Y’s, when you buy your block of 10 classes or however many, you also get access to the gym on class days.  Hit the elliptical, go dance, have a sauna. Much more cost effective!

As to how good a workout a tap or ballet class would be, I would reckon that a tap class would be a more vigorous workout, especially at a beginner level. Swing and some of the Latin dances such as rhumba are insane workouts even at the beginner level, too.  Plus rhumba is one super sexy dance!

i’ve taken adult ballet and also bellydancing. loved both of them! i’d be interesed in tap too actually so i’m not really much help here. tap would be cardio and ballet would be more toning and stretching. can you look into taking one class of each and see which one you like better?

@howtobeawife:  I did tap dancing for a year, it was awesome fun! I did it with my sisters one night a week. i wouldn’t ever do ballet, because I was uncoordinated enough with tap dancing, and don’t have the flexibility to pull off ballet. And ballet shoes have gotta hurt! Are you looking to lose weight, or get fit? It depends what your ultimate goal is – I didn’t notice much difference in weight when I did tap, it was a beginners class and not overly strenuous. I’d love to do Zumba, I bought Zumba for the wii though, and felt like bambi on ice. I sweated so much and couldn’t actually get through the first lesson. I can see why people love it though, you work hard and it doesn’t feel like classic exercise, if that makes sense. For me, at the moment I’m running 5 mornings a week, and I’m going to get the 30 Day Shred. I feel like Jullian will motivate me no end (hell, even watching her on TV motivates me!). It’s about finding something you enjoy, and sticking with it. I run because it costs me nothing.

Ballet hands down. But then again I am biased. I danced ballet for 15 years
