I had braces as a pre-teen and it was so horrible because I constantly got picked on (yes I still have childhood issues). When I got them off I was elated because my teeth were perfect finally! My wisdom teeth were nowhere to be seen when i got off my braces and didn’t pop up until I was 16 or 17. They RUINED my straight teeth because instead of coming in normal they were coming in a different way pushing all my teeth together .
All that work and now my bottom teeth look horrible and crowded, my top aren’t that bad but could use work. My husband said he’ll help pay for them if I want them again but it was so traumatic having them the first time I don’t know how it would be as an adult, however I long to have nice straight teeth.
Any bees have braces as an adult? Did you get the silver metal or clear or behind the teeth? I consulted with a orthodontist 2 years ago and Invisalign is not an option because my bottom teeth are too crooked now.
Please share your experience!

I had my braces put on when I was 28 years old. My Bee profile photo is actually me when I had the braces on.
Invisalign was not an option for me either due to crowding on my lower arch. I almost had to get jaw surgery because they weren’t certain my lower teeth were going to have enough room to line up properly. Luckily, the time with my braces came and went. They were on for 27 months and I was elated to have them removed a week before my 31st birthday….Turning 30 with braces was fun!! Nobody believed I was 30 with braces 🙂
I had clear brackets on my upper front top teeth, but the wire was still metallic. The lower was all metallic. I wasn’t sold on having the porcelin ones (that match your tooth color) because they were more expensive and easily discolored.
I’m glad that I eventually got my braces…..parents couldn’t afford them when I was younger. Now I get a lot of compliments on my smile!

I had braces as an adult. Basically the choice comes down to braces for a couple of years or teeth that you are not happy with for life.

I had braces as a teenager, though I have no experience with adult braces. Honestly, the advancements they have made since I wore them are huge! They are much more subtle than they used to be.
What if you did Invisalign for your top teeth and then braces for the bottom? Not sure what that means cost-wise, but my bottom braces rarely showed. If you could get the Invisalign on the top, it would definitely be worth looking into. These are your teeth and they will last you (hopefully!) your whole life. I think you would be happier if you got them straightened again – I know I would be. A few years isn’t a lot when you look at the rest of your life…and I had my braces on for 4 years!

I just got my braces off a year ago and I am almost 25. I got the clear on top and the regular on bottom. It was kind of embarrassing because I work all the time and i present alot of meetings and luncheons at my job. So I was always careful with what I ate. My teeth weren’t bad so I only had them on for 11 months it coudl have been worse…but I’m glad I got them. I mean People understand it is bettering your look…it’s a cosmetic thing…I wouldnt worry about it!!! 🙂 and people will forget you even have them!!! Good luck!

I was just going to suggest that!
If you could do invisalign on the top and traditional braces on the bottom that might be easier.

i voted no because personally i am much too self conscious about stuff getting stuck in the braces and i have the tendency to accidently bite my lip and get sores so i figured braces would cut my lips even more. BUT, i think if you’re not like me then i would definitely go for them because in the long run your teeth will look great, there’s less tendency you’ll get cavities because there’s actually room to floss your teeth and your breath i would think would smell better

I had braces twice, once when I was in middle school and once in college. It is becoming more common with adults, so I would not worry too much about the vanity factor. FIs sister just got braces and she is 28. She chose to get the regular metal braces as they are quicker than the clear ones. I have not heard much about the braces applied to the back of the teeth except that they are more uncomfortable.
I would say go for it, it will be totally worth it when you are done!!

I had braces in my late teens early 20s. It was the best decision of my life. I have known people to get braces in their 30s and 40s. I think that you should get them. I love having a beautiful smile (even though everyone said that there was nothing wrong with them before). I feel more confident and I smile as much as I can.

@gvsusara- Thanks for your story! I think I might actually go for a consult again with a new orthodontist!
Thanks for the input ladies, I would love invisalign but as I said in the original post, it’s not an option because of alignment and the current crookedness of my teeth.

I don’t think it really matters how old you are, because they are TOTALLY worth it.
FWIW, I’ve had braces twice now. Once when I was in HS/college and then a second set which I just got off early last year. When I got them off, I also got my teeth whitened, and everyone thought I had gotten veneers because they were so straight/nice looking.
Just remember to wear your retainers afterwards, if you get them. I didn’t wear mine the first time, which is why I had to get braces again. I wear them every day now.

If you do decide to get them see if they can install a permanent retainer when you get them off. I’ve had one since I got my braces off when I was 13 – it’s just a little bar glued to the back of my teeth (so you can’t see it). But it helps to keep my teeth from shifting.

I know 2 people that have had braces as an adult. I didnt even notice until they told me. You can do some creative smiling in pictures and no one will even see. I had braces as a teen but it was not big deal to me. A lot of teens had them. More and more adults are getting them too. It is totally worth it. I still wear my retainer and I got my braces off at 14

I am almost finished with Insvisalign. I had braces for 4 years from 10-14. Invisalign is more expensive but I love it!

I just got my off this spring and it was totally worth it! I had the white proclien ones so for the most part it was hard to even seen them from a distance.
