If you read the State Department advisory and look at a map you will see that all the trouble areas are a LONG way from Cancun or the Riviera Maya.

We even drove 3 hours west of the resort to Chichen and felt extremely safe. The whole area (Cancun/Maya Riveria) was created solely for tourism. We just got back from a week at Excellence Playa Mujeres. The resort is beautiful and the service is above anything we’ve ever experienced. Felt like heaven.

If you are still worried Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic might be worth checking out. I’ve known people who have stayed at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro and Secrets Royal Beach.

We also honeymooned at Excellence at Playa Mujeres and it was awesome! Feel free to PM me if you want to talk. SO and I made a list of things we would do differently if we go back, just some “nice to knows”. We felt safe while we were there but that was because we did everything through the resort – our excursion to Chichen Itza was booked through the resort and our airport transfer was also with a company that regularly worked with the resort. I realize we did not really “see” Mexico but we were there for the resort and we were OK with that.

Sandals. Secrets. There are quite a few in Aruba, too.

We stayed at the Renaissance Marina in Aruba. It was absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. They even have a private island with an adults only beach. we did all inclusive so we didn’t have to worry about the cost of food and drinks. The island is also really safe so you’re not gated in like you would be in Mexico. We walked around in theit downtown area which had a lot of cool shops and felt completely safe.

Vineyard-bride15:  I LOVED Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Cancun and felt safe at both. There are so many fun excursions to do!

I’d also check out Secrets, especially Secrets Maroma.

Vineyard-bride15:  what about Riu Antillas Aruba?  or the Iberostar rose hall grand Montego bay?  (both are adults only)
