Hi,

We’re doing a similar thing next month at Mount Gulian in Beacon. Have you looked there? We have to bring in almost everything for our wedding, but Mount Gulian is very accomodating and helpful with finding local vendors. Also, they already have lights there. A small thing, but one less thing to worry about.

We’re not having a traditional caterer either. We’re hiring Durants party rentals, a separate wedding event planning company wiht a day -of -coordinator & waitstaff, and then a separate local restaurant fort he food. It’s saving us thousands of dollars and allowing us to create the wedding that we want.

I would research Mount Gulian. Hope this helps!

Hi Solarpowered,

I have recently booked my August 2013 wedding at Shadow Lawn and have been shopping for quotes all over for all the necessary needs. I’ll be glad to share my findings with you if you are still considering Shadow Lawn. My background is catering too so I am pretty shrewd with the catering and rental quotes. Also, if you are considering using mis-matched vintage china for your place settings, I decided to purchase my own collection with the thought that I’d rent it out before my date, and sell it after my date. I was going to start listing it as soon as I feel I have enough which should be imminently and definiately in time for next year’s rustic wedding season to start. I am not looking to make a lot of money from it, just enough to off-set the purchase price a little until I can re-sell it.

Anyway, aside from that, if you want to talk more about Shadow Lawn, please feel free to ask. And if you know of anyone looking to rent vintage china for less than a rental company, send them my direction! Thanks:)

@Jicki75:  Hi Jicki, I recently got engaged, and looked into Shadow Lawn as a venue, but haven’t been able to find a caterer that’s in the price range I’m looking for.  Do you have any recommendations from your preparation for your wedding?

@Schminx:  Hi Schminx,

Apologies, I just saw your question now.

I’m not sure if you’re still interested in Shadow Lawn and a caterer for there but we went with Linda Laestadius at Sweet Nothings. She is based out of Mount Tremper and is predonimently known for her cakes, but I can certainly vouch for her menu items that we have chosen so I’m sure that the rest of her food will be as delicious! She is very accomodating and I think her prices are very reasonable. Here is her website: http://www.sweetnothingsny.com/

Our second choice would’ve been Harvest Real Food Catering though they are more expensive. Mark is the Chef and Tammy is the Co-Ordinator; their website is: http://www.marksuszczynski.com/

Let me know if you have any more questions? I’d be happy to help if I can…

@Jicki75:

Hi Jicki and everyone else!

I too am interested in having my wedding at Shadow Lawn! We are going to see it this weekend and from the pictures that I have seen it looks perfect! I am concerned about the bathroom situation and the back up plan for if it rains. I recently got a quote for a tent that was almost 10 grand! That seems so crazy to me, but I am fairly new at all this stuff. I am feeling really overwhelmed by the venue search, we want something that is not to wedding-y and we want the food to be amazing and casual. We are looking along the Delaware River as well, just trying to find the perfect spot. If anyone has any suggestions or insight on Shadow Lawn I would reallly really appreciate it!! Also, I would be interested in those plates if you havent already found a buyer!!

Thanks so much!

@Jicki75:

Can I just say “ditto” to kaktr2?  I am starting my search recently and am starting to feel overwhelmed.  Why?  Becuase I have planned to use Shadow Lawn before I even knew my fiancee and now I am thinking “should I also check out every barn in the tri-state area???”  I’m complicating this a bit I think!  And I am also starting to get worried with the whole barn situation… Namely bathrooms and rain like kaktr2 but also the whole DIY element.  Like, how do you get someone to execute your vision.  Do you hire an event person?  I’m sorry… i’m so new to this.

Thanks for your help!

Nicole

@nharper

Have either of you checked out Tralee Farm?  I had my wedding there this summer and it is less expensive than Shadow Lawn.  It has amazing views, the barn is a lot bigger than Shadow Lawn, and don’t have a road right in front of the barn! Check it out it’s a great spot and the owner is wonderful to work with.

As for the whole bathroom situation, you can rent restroom trailers that are 5 stars! They are amazing and your guest will be shocked on how amazing they are.

For feeling overwhelmed, I suggest going with a caterer who will do all your rentals for you, so you don’t have to do it yourself.

@Dutch1027:  Hi, Im getting married at Mount Gulian next year and I was looking to hire seperate servers as well. May I ask how the wait staff from Durrants Party Rentals was? What were their prices like? Also, would you be able to tell me what restaurant your food was from? Thank you!

@nharper, and @kaktr2,

sorry for this delayed response, not sure why I’m getting such delayed notices from weddingbee?

Ok where do I start? Yes tents run to be a lot of money, especially when your paying for a barn location to begin with. It was this reason I ended up not having my wedding at shadow lawn, I actually backed out almost immediately after we booked because my guest list would’ve forced my hand into renting a tent which I didn’t want. I was very happy with my decsision in the end. We were married at The Inn at West Settlement in the town of Roxbury NY which is an hour further north from High Falls. It was the right decision for us. Anyway, Shadow Lawn is a very lovely venue and congratulations if you booked there. They have some very lovely alternative inns and venues nearby for your guests.

As to caterers, I cannot express just how wonderful my caterer is. I was happy with her food etc. beforehand but even more so since our day. Our guests are still raving about the food quality even now almost 2 months from our day, and bear in mind that the majority of my guests are in some way affiliated with the restaurant/catering business, they had high expectations to start with! I know I listed her above but her name is Linda Laestadius from Sweet Nothing’s in Mount Tremper which is also close enough to High Falls for her to cater at Shdow Lawn. She is really who you want, trust me! If however she is booked I would go with Harvest Real Food Catering – Chef Mark, coordinator Tammy, they also have a lovely inn close by for your guests to stay.

Event planner – I am very detail oriented when it comes to this stuff (maybe because I do it at work for others) but I did contemplate hiring a ‘day of’ event planner. I knew I could get all the details done beforehand but I did wonder who would ‘manage’ the flow of the day and see through my vision. In the end an unfortunate family bereavement changed several budgeted large ticket items (photographer, videographer) let alone my day of coordinator. Had that not been the case I would’ve booked Hudson Valley Ceremonies with whom I booked baby sitting services from. Theyre reviews and price were good.

Rain & Bathrooms – Bathroom unit rental for Shadow Lawn will set you back some money, and if as I suspect the price for Shadow Lawn has gone up considerably since I “booked” so probably has the bathroom cost. And yes, regardless of the price increase, you should factor in the cost of a ‘real’ bathroom unit and not a porta-potty, trust me your guests will notice! My venue had actual bathrooms built before this summers wedding season (and included the good bathroom rental in the site fee anyway) so in the end that wasn’t a factor for us but please know that this is an important part of a DIY budget. As for rain, that is something you can only hope to avoid, we were lucky, we had a glorious day, but should we have married on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend instead of the Friday we would have been washed out for our ceremony and cocktail hour, instead we relished in the fantastic Catskills thunder and lightening storm that took place the next day. Yes rain is a possibility, the only advice I have for that is to have a back up plan and enjoy your day no matter what, don’t let rain spoil your fun (but that is why a back up plan is important!)

Plates – yes and I have them and may be interested in a buyer?! I haven’t got around to sorting them out since we returned from our day but hope to very soon. I am also not sure that I want to resell them all or just some or rent them out or what, I guess that will depend on how I feel after I’ve reorganized, however I do have a full service that we were able to use for our 126 guests (including a set of 10 melamine ‘vintage china looking’ plates for our younger kids). I have photos of my tables and place settings that I can email out if anyone wants to see what I did, even if its just for inspiration:)

So did I answer everyone’s questions, even if my answers are late? 😉 I wish you all the best for your future and have fabulous weddings ladies! Let me know if I can help with anything else? Or if you want to see pics!

Jicki75 🙂

Jicki75:  Hi!

I’m also thinking about having my wedding at Shadow Lawn but have some concerns about the road in front of the barn. Dan told me there shouldn’t be too many cars on a Saturday night but when I was visiting, I thought the cars passing by were pretty loud. Would love to hear how your August wedding went? Was the road an issue?

Thank you and would appreciate your thoughts!
