So one of my bridesmaids is long distance and lives in the middle east (she teaches there and comes home in the summer, so she will be home for the wedding 🙂 ) She sent me her measurements and I called the dress store to order her dress for her and they told me that I should order her a size 20. Now my friend, while busty, is defintely not a size 20. Her normal dress size is 12. They said her top measurements were measuring around a 14 but her waist was between an 18-20. They said it was better to order bigger and then have it taken in but I am just so worried she will be SWIMMING in a size 20 and even if it’s taken in I feel like it could still look strange.
Has anyone has this happen to them before or have any advice on what to do???

@jennyDtobe: I have a Bridesmaid or Best Man in Japan with a similar issue. Her bust and hips measured around a size 8, but her waist was a size 12 or 14. The store said the measurements couldn’t be right, but my friend assured me they were. My friend then asked me to order her an 8, and she said she would try to lose weight. I really thought I should order something larger – either a 10 or 12 so that the waist could be let out just a little and/or the bust and hips could be taken in – but she said she really wanted an 8. :- I don’t know yet how it will turn out, but I can let you know in four months…

@jennyDtobe: Did she do the measurements herself or at a dress shop?

I had my measurements taken a year ago for a bridesmaid dress, and they told me I needed a size 20 (I usually wear about a 14). The dress was GIGANTIC and I ended up having a tailor take in 6 inches in circumference. Honestly, I wish the dress shop had let me just order a size 16 (one size up, which is pretty standard for formal wear), which would have fit perfectly.
I would perhaps do some research about the brand/style of dress you are buying- does this designer usually run small? Is the dress a forgiving cut? Could you ask to see samples of different sizes to judge? This might help prevent some alteration disasters later!

I was just talking about this with one of my BMs. While she is not overseas, she is Out of Town and I want to order all of the dresses together so she gave me her measurements. Based on the size chart, she’d be getting a 16, which is about 4 sizes bigger than her ‘normal’ size (though she does have a larger bust). She got measured at a shop near her. When I go to order the rest of the dresses with my other girls, I will confirm my last girl’s size but it seems so odd…I know she will need to get it taken in (for all the measurements).

@cameronwedding I am not sure if she did them herself or went to a shop for them to do it. I should ask her.
AHH I am just SO concerned about it being way too big on her. She comes home the first week of August and my wedding is the 17th, so that does not leave a lot of time for alterations. Not to mention, there is an extra cost for ordering a size 20 because of the fabric. I just think it is insanity to order that size for her!
Thanks for all of your input everyone, it is definitely helpful!

@jennyDtobe: I feel you on having little to no time for alterations. My Japanese bridesmaid won’t get here until four days before the wedding.

@ GreenEyedMoon: WOW that is truly not much time at all. I hope it works out for you. My Bridesmaid or Best Man plans on losing weight too, which is definitely another reason why I am so hesitant to order the bigger size.

I have the same issue with my Maid/Matron of Honor. She was measured by Afred Angelo and measurements sent here. They ordered much larger because they order by waist or hips?

I’d say dont let them talk you into ordering up too high. The same thing happened to me, I was ordering Bridesmaid or Best Man dress for friends wedding gave my exact measurements, and she said Ok, that “- ” size. I was like, WHAT? I never wear that size, thats 3 sizes up for me. She assured me it would fit, or at the worst it would be tiny bit big, but better to be big than too small, as the wedding was 8 mos away. Well, I got it and it was at least 4 sizes too big! (Im a street size 2/4, mostly b/c hip measurement, but they ordered an 8!!!!)

I’m rather busty as well, and I’ve had this experience. I wear a size 4 or 6 for normal clothes, but my Alfred Angelo Bridesmaid or Best Man dress last year was a size 8 and my David’s Bridal Bridesmaid or Best Man dress I just picked up is a size 10. My wedding dress was also a size 10. They all fit well except they are all too long (I’m 5’4”)- the only alterations I needed/need were hems and shortened straps. It probably helped that the sillhouette of all of the dresses (A-line with corset tops) matches my figure closely.
So they might actually be right, though I would check. Maybe you could go to a store and look at a size 20 dress in person, and see how it compares to a mental image of your BM?
