I didn’t end up going the custom route because the dress style I chose after labor and materials would have capped my budget regardless. And I felt I could have gotten a preowned one for the same price.

My tips would be to still go to stores and try on dresses so you know what styles look good on you. Especially if there is a specific style you are asking your dressmaker to make you should definitely try that dress on.

Bring pictures of gowns you like, get information online on what the material of the dress is etc. So that s/he knows how to price out the materials.

Ask to see pictures of wedding dress they have made before.

Ask what their process is. Do they make a muslin pattern first? How many fittings are included? Some do charge for the fittings too!
