- Wedding: June 2015
Hey bees, Fiance & I would like to do a courthouse wedding with immediate family members, followed by a big reception the next day. We live in Athens; my parents live in the Atlanta area, about an hour and fifteen minutes away, while his family lives out of town and will be staying in a hotel for the wedding. We want to do the reception near my parents’ house at a great venue we found.
The only problem is… none of the counties near my parents’ house allow you to make appointments for a courthouse ceremony. We could get an appointment in Athens, but that would require my family to drive a while, and his family to be staying in two different unfamiliar cities in two days… so that isn’t ideal.
We we can try to find a judge through a family friend who would marry us in their courtroom, but obviously that’s a long shot.
So, I am trying to decide between the following options and would appreciate advice from anyone who’s been there:
1. Show up at the courthouse during their wait times 1-2 days before the reception, and hope we don’t have to wait long.
2. Book an officiant and do a small ceremony at my parents’ house or a small venue the day before the reception.
Option 2 makes me sad, because I really want the courthouse experience and want to avoid the whole planning-a-ceremony thing – but I definitely don’t want our plans derailed by not having an appointment. Has anyone done either of these types of ceremonies? If so, any advice?
