I haven’t taken any medication at all since the summer. Not even when I get my massive migraines. It’s been hard but I feel better. Not healthier but not so nervous about the multiple toxins that are going into my body. Plus it helps my body fight these things on their own.
But today I feel a cold kicking in and I know it’s gonna be a nasty one. My chest already feels full of pressure just like my head. My neck is stiff and my throat hurts. It’s only the first day so I know this cold is gonna be a doozie and I’m such a HUGE baby when it comes to colds.
I still wont take meds, I wont unless it’s a serious condition. It’s just not what I want or feel comfortable taking anything.
I’m looking for help with natural remedies for helping the symptoms of a cold. I drank a bottle of orange juice but that’s about all I know about helping colds go away. Any ideas?
I have also been seeing people go through this detox thing to cleanse their body and I’m thinking I really need it. Even though I’m not over weight per se I’ve been eating fast food a lot, red meats, salt, lots of sugar, lots of butter, I’m just not a healthy eater and think doing one of these detox things before the wedding may be a good idea. I’ve also heard of liquid diets and that some are healthy for you? Any advice or ideas on detox or liquid diets?

A good start would be to educate yourself about what toxins actually are. Most people don’t know, and it makes it easier for them to be taken advantage of by those peddling products to remove toxins.
There isn’t much you can do to make a cold go away faster. You can reduce the symptoms a little bit though. Try a saline nasal rinse, personally I avoid using a neti-pot as there are less awkward delivery methods.

@kris325: I want to warn you that just because something is natural doesn’t make it safe or somehow better. Plenty of “toxins” exist in nature as well.
With that said, try echinacea, warm chicken noodle soup (helps to flush out those sinuses), lots of rest, and don’t push your body. Colds suck but you can’t do much but let nature take its course!
I wouldn’t advise trying a cleanse or anything like that when your body is trying to fight something off.
I like to have a shot of wheatgrass (you can find it at some smoothie places)… it’s nasty but I swear it makes me feel better and help prevent colds. I try to have some before I board a plane as well so I don’t pick anything up. Could just be wishful thinking on my part, but it has the nutritional equivalent of a LOT of spinach/dark leafy greens.

What exactly do people think “toxins” are? I hear yoga teachers say it sometimes, like a twisting pose will help squeeze out toxins, and I try really hard not to laugh. What are these toxins and where do they go? Detox diets don’t really do anything except make you lose water weight. If you’re really sick, taking appropriately dosed cold medicine is perfectly safe.

I’ve been trying Dr. Schultz’s Formula #2 which got amazing reviews on Amazon.com. Like you, I’m not looking to flush out any weight.. just looking purely to cleanse! It’s only day 3 for me, and I haven’t been doing it the suggested 5x/day. I do feel more energetic though and less bloaty than I usually feel immediately after eating a meal.. I think I’m gonna keep on this just to keep my colon in check!
Word of advice though if you want to try this Formula 2.. it’s not the most pleasant thing to drink! I find the powder goes down better when I mix it with OJ 🙂

Also, I take these Antioxidant Plus pills when I feel I’m coming down with something (my father who is a pharmacist swears by these things). It’s basically a concoction of a ridiculously high amount of vitamin C, zinc.. all the good stuff. I take 2 and I stay pretty healthy.. whatever cold symptoms I start out with go away really fast. I am in sick people’s mouths all day long, so it must be pretty good stuff. I think it’s by Nature’s Bounty.

Generally speaking, most of that stuff is snake oil so be sure to do research (not from the company’s website!) about what the stuff is and what it is supposed to do. Some of it can have nasty effects and interactions.
Unless you don’t have a functioning liver or kidneys, you body does a pretty good job of cleaning toxins from itself. Best thing for a cold is rest, hydration and proper nutrition. It’s viral so other than symptom managment there isn’t much you can do but let your immune system fight it. A hot shower can help clear your sinuses to relieve some of that but I still would be wary of the “natural” remedies, there is a whole lot that is natural that if used incorrectly can still kill you way faster than some antitussant and decongestant meds.
