Unfortunately, with any natural resource (e.g., natural gemstone) there is the chance of ethical issues. It is actually more difficult to get documentation on the background of a non-diamond gemstone (though not impossible). Same thing for melee diamonds in many ring designs… (consider that, e.g., a melee diamond halo around a colored gem ring actually has many more diamonds in it than a diamond solitare does). Even synthetics have issues regarding pollution. Never mind the ethical concerns about the metal in the ring! Any product we buy has the very real potential to have ethical concerns about it, whether or not popular Hollywood movies have been made to that effect.

On a brighter note, I absolutely do think that colored gems “age well.” In particular, a ceylon blue sapphire, ruby or emerald never look out of place on any woman… in fact I think older women pull off these gemstones better than younger women do! Those are the most popular colors of corundum/beryl, but other colors are beautiful too! Personally, I would go for something with a bit more color to it than the examples you shared, to me these colors feel a bit “faded”…you could do a more saturated pastel if pastel is what you like… but it really comes down to personal preference. I would suggest a corundum over a beryl if you are planning to wear it daily, because the higher hardness will hold up well over the years.

By The Way, personally my engagement ring is diamond, but I love colored gemstones as well.

@hidingpearl:  I love the lavendar sapphire with a pave band it would look stunning!! the pale blue would also look really lovely. Oh and to your question about whether they age well, diamonds only became popular in the last 50 years or so before that sapphire and ruby rings were more common and my nan still wears hers and it looks immaculate, she has never taken it off in 50 years except to do the dishes and to shower and she inspired my sapphire ring =] Hope you arent waiting too long but glad you found the boards they kept me sane during the waiting process xx

I have never seen a pale blue sapphire before and now I am drooling! I’m not much help because I think all of those stones are gorgeous – don’t think you can go wrong with any of them!

I am loving the pastel coloured sapphires!  I am particularly drawn to the yellow with halo and pave.

I feel like the yellows make the stones look like a poor grade of diamond..  every once and awhile in a certain light I catch a glimpse of my diamond with a yellow hue and it irks me. The blue almost makes the outside diamonds look yellow-ish. I am quite a fan of the lavendar though.. it looks very vintage. It also looks like you meant for it to be that way ๐Ÿ™‚ I vote lavendar!

I dont have a pale blue sapphire, but I have a pale aquamarine with pave halo and band which looks very similar to one of your choices. I went with an aqua because of sentimental value, but it has the added benefit of being budget-friendly too. I think classic colored stones like rubies, emeralds, aquas, and opals age well and do not look “trendy” or “dated” on someone as they advance in years. I say go for the color!

Here is mine just for reference:

@hidingpearl:  I did toy with the idea of a pink stone for my ering. However, I am the type of person that get bored fast and a colored stone for me, might not match with everything. So I decided with a white sapphire and white diamonds (halo). This is what mine looks like.

I like the lavendar but I’m partial to purples.

I love them ALL! My ring is super similar to the style you’re looking at ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s a blue topaz for FI’s birthstone (& the month he proposed!)
