I bought my dress off the rack at David’s for about $300ish, and it was another $175-$200 for alterations.

Some people use recycledbride or even the weddingbee classifieds to find pre-owned gowns.  I found a great sample sale at a local bridal boutique, and many of their gowns were priced under $500.  You can also search for local trunk shows, sample sales, or ask if you can buy off the rack for a discount.

Just rememeber to take into account that you will probably need a crinoline or petticoat and alterations, so you don’t spend your entire dress budget on a dress.

@DaneLady:  Great words of wisdom!

I would also check out all your local wedding boutiques, and call ahead to see what samples they have in what price range. I was shopping for samples, and found one store that had several beautiful dresses in my size for $99! It just depends. I found my dress as a sample that was $500, which is your entire budget, but alterations will only be about 100 (put in cups, hemming. Fits like a glove!). This may be more reliable than looking online, and Davids Bridal is also a great place to look for both new and sample budget gowns!

Church Street Bridal!  It is in Virginia, but they regularly feature dresses on their FB page, and they have AMAZING designer dresses for under $500 (deisgners like Lazaro, Monique Lhuillier, Alita Graham, and Marisa, just to name a few).  AND all the proceeds go to anti-domestic violence programs.

You can ask bridal shops if they are having a sample sale any time soon.

I found my all lace Casablanca in Dec. 2011 at a sample sale.  Only $399!  No alterations needed.

Otherwise, you can learn what your sizes are in various quality brands (by trying these brands on in person), then go to used gown sites and look for a gown in your size brand new, but unaltered.  So many brides change their minds and are selling perfectly new gowns.

http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com is a major one.

David’s Bridal has many gowns you can take home that day or oder very quickly for that price range.

Bridal shows should be starting up again and I hear you can get good deals there if you’re ok with paying in full on the spot.

Or if you’re into simple designs, there’s J. Crew, Ann Taylor, Nicole Miller, Cache, etc.
