I’m in the initial stages of pricing wedding photographers for our wedding next year in Alexandria, VA. Photography is not really a huge priority to my partner or me, so I’m really just looking for someone who can take reasonably decent photots that I won’t mind looking at for the rest of my life (I know this is still a skill, I’m just not super concerned with loving a particular photographer’s style; I don’t need anything fancy).
Ideally we’d use the same photographer for our engagement photos and wedding day, but I don’t need any first look, getting ready shots, or a second shooter.
So, my priority with this is price. I’d really, really love to be able to keep the wedding day photography costs at around $1000 (let’s say $1500 cap), for just the photography and digital images of the photos (with rights to print off as many copies as I want — that’s a must). Ideally, this would include about 7 hours of photography time.
The wedding is also on a Sunday morning, if the unusual time might persuade any photographers to discount since they could still shoot on the preceeding Saturday, if they wanted.
Does anyone have any photographers to recommend?

gubidal092 : When is your wedding? I am getting married in Middleburg next September and we are paying a fortune for our photographer so I understand the budget concerns. You’re not gonna find many photographers in this area for $1k unfortunately. I do photography on the side and I am not a certified professional but I have done some of my friends’ engagement pics as well as baby pics and I would be happy to photograph your wedding for a pretty small cost. I’d be happy to privde you with some super high quality shots, maybe a select few you’re in love with (as it sounds this is what you’re looking for) for a much lower price. Just let me know and we can have a conversation 😉

gubidal092 : You might want to try craisgslist. At that price range you’ll definitely be getting an amature photographer or student.

gubidal092 : Try submitting a request on Thumbtack.com. We’re wedding photographers and use Thumbtack to fill in our calendars with smaller budget shoots when we have dates that we’re unable to fill at our normal rates. It’s a great site and doesn’t cost you a thing, we only pay as professionals to send our quotes. It’s the best site out there for finding vendors for smaller budget weddings!

For under $1000, you’re unlikely to find someone with good skills in the DC area. You’re going to find someone non-professional, just starting out with little experience, or a student for that price. With photos…you get what you pay for.

Hi guys! Thank you for this advice! I actually wound up increasing my budget max for $2000, and heard back from a few photographers on Thumbtack (thanks, @elmcophoto) for around $1500-$1600 for 8 hours and engagement shoot included! So, actually right around my original cap.
We really like one of the photographers and hope to book them soon — they’ve done over 100 weddings but mostly bill themselves as a commercial photographer, so I think that might be why we’re getting a bit of a deal. His portfolio looks great, so we we’re just waiting to talk to references before booking.

My bestie got married this past May in Bethesda and used Devon Rowland. She was so nice to work with and the pictures are beautiful. Not sure what her rates are, but I think she was reasonable. Google her – she has a facebook and instagram account so you can see her work.

Maria Grace Photography is amazing! Maria is also the most comforting photographer ever, you don’t even realize she’s around. Was very affordable for us. Not sure of other pricing though, but she’s prompt on email responses. https://mariagracephoto.com/
