I would try to find an affordable wedding planner in your area who can suggest something- someone like this can save you lots of $$ through experience. Also, it helps to look for caterers and then either look for venues throught their website or ask them directly. I had this same issue, it is quite annoying when the venue wants to start at $50 per person just for food.

I can’t help you in that area – but I will tell you – go off the beaten path.  I found an AMAZING venue that is totally flexible about caterers, rentals, etc… and it wasn’t on the Knot, or any wedding websites, its not advertised in any wedding magazines.  Try Yelp, try googling for art galleries or museums, any kind of cultural halls like a Greek Club or something.  Places that aren’t “traditional” wedding venues tend to be more flexible.  Good luck!
