I’m guessing your area is cheaper than NYC, and i’m able to do a wedding here for 150 under $15,000. What is saving us money is finding a raw space (a music venue, in our case) that does rentals, and allows you to bring in any vendor you want. Think outside the box!  Think of barns, non-profits, performance spaces … anything but a catering hall. Additionally, you may want to look for a seperate ceremony location (a park, for example) to get exactly what you want

I did my wedding for around your budget, with 170 invited (120 attending).

We rented a county park pavillion building (the rental was $250 or $350 for the whole day), and we got to pick our own caterer (if we needed to we could have gotten a cheaper one, or even just made the food in the morning or something!)

Check out your local and state parks and recs wedsite.  They might have some great options that are much more affordable.

Try repost this in the South Jersey/Philly boards, you should be able to find some good ideas! My tips would be to look further out west in PA. NJ is pricey, and anything close to Philly will also be pricey. Also, try to find a venue where you can bring in your own caterer.

Since you want an outdoor wedding but need a covered back-up in case of bad weather, what about having the reception at a local park or farm, and renting a tent in case of rain? There are SO MANY pretty tent weddings these days!! Plus I think you can definitely achieve the feel of whimsical romance at a park or a farm.
