One of my coworkers did a safari in Kenya for his honeymoon – I was just talking to him about it. It cost about $20K, but he said it was definitely worth it to experience the animals in their natural habitat and be completely isolated (except for their guide).

Fiance and I really want to go someday. I think you’ll have an amazing time!

It’s a lot more affordable if you don’t sign up with a safari tour. You can stay in safari camps on your own in Kruger (in South Africa) and sign up for safari drives and walks in addition to self-driving, which is very easy. My hubby and I had a blast there a few months ago! We still want to do the full-out private guide kind of safari in more isolated parts of Africa some day, but it was just way out of our budget to do so at this time. More details, photos and such from the safari in my blog, link in my profile.

I went to Kenya in 2007 and had a great experience with Finch Travels:

It’s owned and operated by locals who have degrees in wildlife management and are extremely friendly and knowledgable. A Kenyan friend and his family came with us and was the one who chose this company. Their prices are a lot less than the giant tour operators.

The lodges you stay at are not the super expensive places, but they’re amazing in their own right. We did 6 days, 5 nights leaving from Nairobi and it cost ~ 1K per person. It’s probably more now, but I’m sure they’re still a fantastic deal. Looking at their website, we must’ve made our own package. Mt. Kenya -> Naivasha -> Maasai Mara

It was definitely worth it! The best trip of my life, by far. Lot of people choose to go to the coast to relax after the safari, and that’s definitely a good idea after all the dust and really bumpy roads.

PM me if you want more details about where exactly we went, stayed, etc.

You’ll love it!
