I take mine off for work during the day. I work with 1 year olds, and my ring has a very high setting. I don’t want to risk scratching them so I take it off. I do feel weird with it off, nonetheless, and I always put it on right after work.

When I had to give my engagement ring up to be sized for two weeks, it really sucked.  I did have a few people ask why I wasn’t wearing my engagement ring, though I don’t think it’s the same having a naked finger while engaged compared to while married. I think after the wedding, I’ll use a stand in if I have to give it up for any longer than a day…even a cheap one is better than nothing!

@Mrs.Goguen:  Aww I’m sorry! It sucks to have a bare finger.. I got married and was never engaged so it was never an issue for me.. but when I’ve had to size my rings in the past I just wear my promise ring in the meantime.. If I didn’t have a promise ring I would probably wear my sterling band.

I have a stunt double ring just for this purpose. When my ring gets resized or polished it gets sent across the country and I can be without it for 2+ weeks. I prefer to have something there rather than a naked finger.

I purchased a very simple placeholder ring for occasions like this. I can’t stand the feeling of not havkng a ring. Maybe find something simple that you can switch out for your e-ring for when you’re without it or working on projects/playing sports/etc?

I don’t use a stand-in, but I feel weird when I have to send mine in for a rhodium dip. I hate when customers at work look at my hand when I mention my Fiance in conversation. It’s so awkward…. My co-workers have never noticed it missing though.

ETA: Oh not sure about you, but I fidget… a LOT! I usually sit and twirl my ring around mindlessly through the day. Not having it was eating at my insanity for that reason. Hah I may have to rethink the stand in thing for the next time my ring needs to be refinished.

I went crazy one night when mine was getting a diamond replaced (popped right out, the pretty little jerk, thank goodness for the protection plan).  It had already been a few days and I was looking at a couple more weeks so I just ran to the local Claire’s and bought a cheap ring.  It turned my finger green by the end of it, but it was so worth it.  I can’t go naked 🙁

I have a plain 4mm yellow gold plated tungsten band that I keep in my wallet just in case I leave my ring in the bathroom or something. I, too, hate the feeling of no ring. My stand in was $5 on ebay

When my e-ring had to be in the “shop” to have a diamond replaced I just wore the promise ring Fiance gave me while dating. It is a yellow gold black pearl ring with a small diamond on either side of the pearl.  It made me feel so much better to have a ring on my finger AND a ring that Fiance had given me.
