I’m going to a wedding (today actually) where the ceremony is in the middle of the day at a church, and the reception is several hours later, at a hotel. I got a cute dress to wear to the reception (purple, one-shoulder, some glitz).
Question is, what do I wear to the ceremony? I feel like my evening dress would be weird to wear to a church in the middle of the day, and there’s several hours in between events so it makes sense to change. But I don’t want to be underdressed for the ceremony either.

when I attend weddings with large gaps, I usually wear business attire to the wedding – a dress or skirt with cardigan, etc. The last wedding I went to at a church, had some guests in jeans – that was inappropriate to me. Put on your “sunday best”

Is the dress you’re wearing this evening a style where you could throw on a black cardigan or something over it to make it a bit more daytime-appropriate?

@Wonderstruck: Not really, it’s definitely an evening dress.
I like that idea, just wondered if you’re supposed to dress up more for a church wedding than you would for an ordinary church mass?

@ZoeyGirl: you’ll likely see a combo of regular “church” attire and people in the dresses for the evening. You won’t feel out of place if you’re dressed down a bit more – it’s appropriate for the afternoon.
