I’m a very active person, and when I am out hiking, kayaking, going to the beach, working out, etc, I love to wear my hair in French braided pigtails. The thing is, I am now in my 30s, and have become slightly self conscious about this look. What do you all think? Is this an age appropriate hairstyle? A huge part of me thinks the idea of age appropriate hair is ridiculous, and yet I can’t help but be a little concerned when I sport this look.
*just to note, I have never gotten anything other than compliments*
Please let me know your thoughts!

pnwlove : there is no such thing as an age appropriate hair style. I will wear my hair in a high ponytail until im dead because that’s how i like it and how it’s most comfortable, idc. But to change it up a bit, since you know how to french braid, i suggest 3 french braids that converge into one at the back of the top of your head. Thats what I’d do if i could french braid my hair well.

I might side eye it in a professional setting but I see nothing wrong with it for the active lifestyle you’re describing. I french braid my hair when I’m being more active because it keeps the shorter layers tucked in.

Who cares? Life is short. Wear your hair however the f you want.

Oh my goodness, PLEASE keep wearing your hair exactly how you love it! I never learned how to french braid my hair but always wanted to! This inspires me to learn and START wearing them at age 31! : )

pnwlove : If you feel comfortable why would you change? Especially if you get alot of compliments. Keep rocking the braids and pony tails. You do you!

I am way, way older than you, and l am here to say, wear your hair exactly as you like it to look.
If you think a style no longer suits you, then fine, change it, but not because of any idea of age related suitability

I don’t think pig-tails of any sort are an acceptable professional way to wear your hair, but you aren’t talking about professionalism here. If you are active, wear your hair however you damn well please! I bet it is cute and convenient, and if you get compliments, then why stop?

FutureMrsBex : Is one french braid not ok in a professional setting?

sweatergal007 : I think one french braid is ok. It’s the pigtails I would question in a professional settinf because let’s be honest..you do tend to see them on younger girls. Pigtails in an office wouldn’t make clutch my pearls or anything. I just don’t think it’s the most professional look in the world.

I’m super old and I wear whatever the hell I want.

It’s pretty trendy for girls to wear their hair like that around here!

I stopped wearing my hair that way because I look super young for my age and it wasn’t helping. Now I just do one braid. But it was a choice I made, I wouldn’t make it for anyone else! I’ve been told I should wear my hair shorter to look older too, but I have long curls that go almost to my butt and I love them! Life is too short to worry about hair.

I like the look but for more casual settings (though I don’t do it myself – hair not long enough). The character of Yo Yo on Agents of SHIELD wears her hair like that sometimes including the recent season. I can’t find a photo though.
