I moved out for college as a primary reason – I was young to finish high school, and had a late birthday so it seems younger, but it wasn’t too much vs going to college.  I had things starting 7 weeks after I moved, and I really think the 7 weeks helped me get my language to my best – I can legally translate Finnish to English even now.  So it was valuable then.

However, a large part was my mom.  She divorced my dad while he was deployed when I was 12 because of her reasons.  Obviously, I couldn’t go live with my dad so I was stuck.  And because I wasn’t the girly girl princess she wanted, and I was too young and stubborn to realize that fighting a narcissist will always fail, we had an awful relationship.  So I went looking for my first chance to escape, the ability to go to Finland for college became possible, and I ran. Then being half a world away, coming back over breaks wasn’t worth it. Then I got the job back in the US, but as far from her as I could manage while being close to my father. My dad and I got along fine, but I’d been living without “adult supervision” for years and didn’t want to live with him.

In my limited experience – under 20 has a lot with one or both sides being unreasonable.

I moved out twice.. the first time at 18 to attend college. I moved back at 23 for 2 years (saving money and paying off debt). Best decision I ever made. I was able to save a lot of money in those two years I lived back at home I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

doglovingwife:  23.  I lived at home durring university and moved out when I finished school.  If you can believe it, it casused a LOT of drama in my family because I moved out “so quickly.”  Crazy.

I left to go to college out of state at 18, met my SO there, and moved across the country to the state he attends graduate school in 2 weeks after I graduated with my bachelor’s at 21. I got a lot of heat since my older sister moved right back into our mother’s house after her graduation and has no plans to move out 3 years later. They both saw my move as abandoning our family, while I saw it as starting a family of my own with my Fiance.

    pinkshoes:  this.

    30. It’s normal in my mum’s culture to stay at home until you get married (not that I am). My siblings however all moved out a lot younger, but there were other factors that kept me at home. My sister was ill for years so I didn’t leave. I went to uni late and I commuted since I was able to. Besides that, my parents and I have a wonderful relationship and I was very happy at home. They have a big house and we looked after each other. I miss it actually.

I moved out at 30 to live with my boyfriend, though we’re not married. But we’ll be together forever, so I’m happy with that 🙂

18 when I left for college at few hours from home. I spent that first summer at home, and at the end of the summer my BF (now DH) and I moved together a few states away for college (who both transferred). We lived in an apartment the first year, and then rented a house for the following 2 years. I’ve been financially independant from my parents since my sophomore year in college. Technically since before that, although they paid my tuition I always paid for my “stuff”.

    23. Moved out with fiance when we closed on our first home. It’ll be a year that we’ve been in the house together in the summer.

I was 24.  I lived at home during university as I could just commute there – it was easier and cheaper than finding a place nearer to uni.  I was at home for another year and a bit after I graduated. It was a tense time, there were no jobs in my town for my qualifications but there was a lot of pressure on me to find work in my field (I did have a long running casual job plus some seasonal work). We fought a lot and I wanted to leave but couldnt afford rent in my town.  I ended up starting a LDR with my now-fiance. I got a part time research job so things were a bit better. I ended up moving to be with Fiance once I found full-time  work in my field in his town.

I was actually 17 originally, I went off to university in August and I have a later birthday (November), but it wasn’t the right school for me, so I came home, stayed for about a year and moved out again just before my 19th birthday.

I was 20. I was tired of being fenced in by overly strict parents who just wanted me to cook, clean and date only one man whom I would marry. I came home for a year due to an illness at age 24 and I was out again at 25. I never went back and I could never live with my parents again.

Im 24 now and I left home when I was 18 for university and I’ve never looked back!  My older sister only moved out for a couple of years before moving back to my mum. My twin brother briefly moved back too but left. We’re both very independent and don’t like to live by others’ rules…
