- Wedding: September 2011
My uncle is a minister, and I have always dreamed of him performing my ceremony. I was all psyched until I was reading his ceremony for the first time (never noticed at the few weddings I’ve seen him do) that his statement on marriage talks a LOT about “man and woman”, which is language I’m not 100% comfortable with. I’m of the belief that marriage is about PEOPLE who love each other, and I just didn’t want such defined terms in my ceremony, as it didn’t reflect my opinions (not that it matters, but for the record I am having a heterosexual wedding).
He and I talked about some alternatives, but the conversation didn’t leave me too optimistic. UNTIL I just opened my email:
The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is
intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort
given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is
God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture
in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Therefore marriage is
not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently,
deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it
was instituted by God.
It only references “husband and wife” once, and I’m fine with that, since that’s what we are (I don’t think anyone will be offended by this, or think I’m in any way excluding the LGBT community in the term marriage).
Anyways, I don’t think it matters to anyoen else, but I was soooo glad he was able to find an alternative that didn’t hinder his requirements by the Church, or step on my beliefs.
In other news…I’ll hear those words ONE MONTH from today 🙂 I’m a happy girl
