I would sit down (or call if you live far away) with your FIL and talk to him about it.  Let him know that you really appreciate his generosity in contributing towards your honeymoon but that you don’t feel that you can afford a Carribean getaway.  See if he would mind you using his contribution towards a trip somewhere in the US that will fit into your budget (I’d have ideas of some domestic trips you’d consider taking as opposed to some generic “other” trip).  I’m sure he’ll be understanding of this and will be happy to see ihs moeny go towards a nice honeymoon for you and your DH – even if it isn’t to the Carribean.

How about Florida?!?!? That way you still get the beachy, Carribbean affect but at cheaper plane rides and hotel prices…South Beach, Key West, Sanibel and Marco Islands, St Petersburg, are all great honeymoon locations!

I think that if you spin it to FIL like “we decided to go somewhere a little bit different than the standard Caribbean honeymoon” there’s no need to tell him the real reason why you went somewhere else and he can still be excited for you and tell people about your trip!

I don’t know if this is too forward, but I’m throwing it out there anyways.

I work for the military (I’m a civilian). One of our perks is this vacation club, which is basically really inexpensive timeshare/hotel/condos all over the world. It’s $369 regularly for a 7 night stay, and its the same price for anywhere in the world. Sometimes they have a $299 or $329 sale.

The reservations are transferable for a $50 payable to the Armed Forces Vacation Club. Only the military and military-civilians have access to this. I’ve taken advantage of this once before, and we’re going to use it for our honeymoon. Theres a lot of places in the caribbean. If you want to browse, lemme know. I’d be more than happy to arrange. Its such an awesome deal, I’ve extended this out to my family/friends as well, because its soooo much cheaper than paying retail.

ohh…some of the caribbean places are all-inclusive, not its not $369, it’d be another rate. but i think you have your choice of all-inclusive option or not…idk.

another tip is to google the name of the resort/hotel. i like trip-advisor, since you get guest-uploaded pics and reviews.

wow i feel like i’m stalking this thread but…theres a place in Jamaica for June 13-20 and its $369. ($53/night). Its a 1 bedroom with a full kitchen.

Thats a decent deal. The pics look awesome. We want to do Jamaica for our honeymoon…or Hawaii…LOL

Why do you think you can’t afford it?  The all-inclusives can be expensive, but we rented a private cottage up on a hillside, over-looking the water for $80/night.  We actually chose to go to the carribean because after figuring out what kind of vacation we could take in the smokies vs carribean we found the smokies to be slightly more $$.  I’ve been to the carribean three times in the past three years (yeah bump and free plane tickets) and haven’t spent more than $500 in a week, which includes lodging and food (ok some of that includes camping but that was only one trip).

I don’t know how much he’S gifting you or where you live but have you considered the option of a cruise. Caribbean cruises are currently quite cheap (you can find $100 per person per night) and don’t require airfare depending on where you live. Our honeymoon flights were about $550 each to fly to the Caribbean and I know we could have found a cruise for that price (not including flights to the departure). Maybe you live in driving distance to a cruise ship port or can find a cheap flight via southwest or some thing. Look at all your options before ruling it out. Mexico seems to be the cheapest place for all inclusive resorts and check travelzoo for specials that depend on dates since you are flexible with when you travel.

I don’t know what to do about the awkwardness of it…but have you checked out vrbo?  I kid you not, on St. Thomas (Saphire Beach to be exact) I was finding places (condos, apartments, cottages) for like $95-$134/night.  On St. John, I found the most adorable little cottage for $84/night.  I’m pretty sure I saved all the links so if you are interested, PM me and I’ll gladly send them your way 🙂

I feel like with all the promoting of the V.I., I should be going there…silly me. haha

Have you looked into Mexico?  You can get some nice deals in the Cancun/Cozumel/Riviera Maya areas, all very tropical!  I don’t know how fancy you want to go, but last fall FI and I spent 6 days at a 3-star all-inclusive in Cozumel for around $650 pp, which included our airfare.  That was their off season, but the same trip in the  summer runs about $800 pp from our airport.  Just a thought.

I still think you can do it.  You might not be staying at a 5-star place, but you’re not going to be doing that anyways in the US on that budget, and in the carribean you’ll have lots of atmosphere to make up for it.  Spend some time on trip advisor and check out prices.

To give you hope look at this place in St. Lucia http://www.caribdreams.net/English/index_e.htm , it’s from $55 a night in the high season and has decent reviews .

So you cut back and have a 5 day honeymoon and only eat out for dinner and lay on the beach and go for hikes but maybe can’t spend the money to go scuba diving, it still sounds like a pretty nice vacation.
