We went on an Alaskan cruise in 2008 and loved it. It was surprisingly warm – we ended up wearing short sleeves the entire time and there was no need for a coat of any sort.

In Juneau we went on the Mount Robert’s Tramway and it was nice, but short. You get a nice view from above though. I would do it if you don’t have any other specific sights in the area that you want to see.

In Skagway we took a round trip train ride (the White Pass Scenic Railway) and we loved it. It was really scenic and it allowed us to see a lot outside of just the port area. I’d definitely do this again.

We also did whale watching (I can’t remember the port) and it was AMAZING. There were orca whales literally 2 feet from our boat. We’ve done whale watching in Hawaii, but it never came close to what we saw in Alaska.

We did an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon and loved it!

We did an excursion through a glacier fjord which was amazing.  We also went sea kayaking (and saw a ton of bald eagles) and salmon fishing (and sent fresh salmon home).  We were going to go dog sledding in one of the ports (via helicopter) but it got cancelled due to weather).

I lived in Juneau for 3 years.  How long are you in that port for?  One thing I remember vividly is hiking up a mountain (I was 9-11, my brother 4 years younger so it probably wasn’t hard) and then walking on the glacier at the top.  Highly recommend!  We did this on our own of course, no excursion.  Otherwise, the salmon fisheries are surprisingly interesting to visit and learn about in Juneau.  For goldrush, I recommend Skagway more, as that has a more “colorful” history and characters, but you could always pan for gold in Juneau if you wanted.

When we were in Alaska we went kayaking (Ketchikan), on a bike/hike (Sitka), on a helicopter ride to the top of a glacier (Juneau) and to a museum and a show in Anchorage. I am forgetting what we did in Skagway. It will be hard to make bad choices, as everything is so gorgeous! Have fun!
