I think of it as a boy’s name although I have known both boys and girls with that name. One of my ex’s is named Alex so it was never a contender for us 😉

My name is Alex (short for Alexandra), so by that very bias I voted girl :p if it helps, most of my fellow “Alex’s” growing up were boys.

If it’s Alexander it’s a boy’s name ,  if Alexandra then it’s a girls’  name.    (I have heard Alexandrina for a girl too. )  So I dont have  a gendered association really .if I hear Alex, then I go by what the child  look slike lol.

Personally  I really dislike  the trend of naming babies with nicknames and/or shortened  versions . If they want to use them or the family does,  fine , but at least  give the  child the dignity of a proper name and the option to use it . Names  like Charlie and Lexy and Sammy etc are kind of juvenile for later life.

I know far more women named Alex than I do men.

I don’t have a default gender which I assume for the name Alex – for me it’s completely unisex and could be either.

I know far more male Alex’s than females though, if that counts for anything.

There’s also Alexa and Alexis. But I associate the name Alex more with boys.
