Travel Nut here… Mr TTR & I are semi-retired… so we travel a fair bit.

Places we’ve liked… The Florida Keys (ya it is the mainland, BUT it is a wee bit of the Caribbean just on familiar territory) – Bermuda – The Bahamas – Puerto Rico – US Virgin Islands – Saint Maarten / Sint Martin – Antigua – St Lucia – and Barbados

OF that list… our faves are in order:

  1. Barbados
  2. Bermuda
  3. Antigua
  4. St Lucia
  5. The Others…

# 1 – Now Barbados is extremely expensive (because of its distance, but also because it is the most developed of all these islands… it is a 1st World Country)

# 2 – Bermuda is GORGEOUS and also a very safe well organized country (but March is not the time to visit… too early)

# 3 – Antigua if FABULOUS – and a wonderful safe & well organized Island.  So therefore you can do an AI, or go with your own Arrangements.  We were in Antigua on our Honeymoon, and I would go back again without hesitation.

# 4 – St Lucia – Another WONDERFUL island, but it is a mountaneous rain forest (formed by a volcano).  This makes it a tad more rugged and not as modern and more difficult to get around etc.  If you go to St Lucia you most definitely want to stay at an AI… and they have many.

# 5 – The Others… The US Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico are both US territories… so you get the Caribbean with a good dose of US familiarity.  BOTH Destinations are BEAUTIFUL… but there are a few things that mean you have to keep your wits about you (ie lots of pickpockets etc)

The Bahamas are also LOVELY… BUT there are a lot of “distractions” on the more popular islands that you have to put up with I find that I don’t see at other Caribbean Destinations… like the harrassment on the beach by Vendors and “Male Escorts” (neither of which make me comfortable… but overall the Islands are so lovely that I’ve learned to put up with it)

Florida Keys… Ok not the Caribbean per se… but a good alternative if one is looking to save money.  Flights to Florida are waaaay cheaper than going abroad… and you get the Added BONUS of not needing a Passport – the Language, Currency & Food is familiar – Lots to do etc

Now there is a long list of other places in the Caribbean that I haven’t been to yet, that I’d love to see… too many to list

What I will list here are the places I won’t be going to anytime soon (if ever)

Dominican Republic (RED FLAG – will not go back there… they are a 3rd World Country with too many problems.  And I don’t like feeling like I am enjoying myself when I am staying at an AI that has barbed wire & armed guards)

Jamaica (YELLOW-ORANGE FLAG – they too have a lot of issues… again this is an place where I don’t feel comfortable exploring on my own or being off the resort in a lot of places.)

Mexico (YELLOW FLAG – I would go to Mexico, but under very limited circumstances)

I don’t EVER see myself going back to the DR.  I would go to Jamaica if it was a stop on a Cruise and I took an Escorted Excursion thru the Cruise Co… same for Mexico… altho I would consider Mexico as a Destination on its own in some very limited capacity.

Hope this helps,

If you are considering AIs you might want to read my recent post that I did for another Bee, it can be found here = http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/exotic-honeymoon-destination-4000-or-less-total#axzz2l0gK32Wu (Reply # 4)

I have been to most of the places mentioned (sandals {all the ones in st lucia} gran bahia {all of them everywhere} and the excellence resorts (playa mujeres is the hands down winner btw)…I don’t think there are any AI options in the cayman islands..but if anyone does I think the Marriot would offer if but it won’t be cheap.

I think to give a better recommendation we would need your budget…

@Flow:

Not to hijack the thread, but maybe you can help me and other bees since you are from Antigua! : ) We are going to CocoBay Resort in Antigua in Feb/March for our honeymoon, staying in the Premium Waterfront Suite. Have you heard good things about this place? Any recommendations for an especially memorable/romantic getaway???

OP- check this place out! We wanted a lot of romantic (all inclusive) seclusion, an amazing view, but with the options of doing a broad spectrum of activities. After searching for WEEKS, we decided this place had the best of all worlds at the most reasonable price (still about $4500 for a six night stay on the premium waterfront suite, though).

No but several of my friends have … they LOVED it.

I posted about it awhile ago for another Bee, see if I can’t dig up the info for you.

.
.

Found it…

Check out this past topic entitled “Aruba or Antigua” = http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/aruba-or-antigua-i-cant-decide#axzz2lnf6nnge

My Replies are # 6 and # 11

My Girlfriend & her Hubby went to the Resorts that are listed and they had a FABULOUS time.

Be aware tho as another Bee mentioned above that AIs are not a requirement on this island, as Aruba is a Dutch Island, and very well organized, Safe etc.

So you might do far better economically on your own…

If you decide to go that route I suggest that you check out TripAdvisor for further info (they also are associated with FlipKey which is owned by Expedia TA’s owner too… so you can find Reviews on TA for FlipKey properties)

Hope this helps,

@smv22114:  Cocobay is okay… it has lovely sunset views. I don’t know much about there because I don’t know anyone who stayed there to even get a decent review.

When you said seclusion GalleyBay came to mind. Verandah, St. James’s and Carlisle Bay also have a lot of great reviews from myself and my friends. A smaller and cheaper hotel that I took a liking to is the Catamaran Hotel.

I hope that helped!

@tiff-tiff-tiff:  Thanks! We really wanted Galley Bay. However, we are going during peak season and one of the higher end rooms (with better views) would have made our rates go up so much more, as it’s def more expensive. We already invested over $6k between lodging and airfare at CocoBay… Heck, any more then that, and we most likely would have just opted for Bora Bora, and footed the bill for the difference! : )

By seclusin I meant having a suite that was unattached to any other rooms, which can sometimes be difficult to find in an AI resort. There are more affordable ones in Jamaica, etc. that we will eventually try… However, we found the overall experience in Antigua to be more of overall laid back/romantic experience we were looking for.

Thank you so much for your help, and we will have to check out some of the other hotels you mentioned!
