Where are you going?  I enjoy AI resorts in certain areas, but not in others.

I read Tripadvisor forums and reviews like there’s no tomorrow when trying to decide on a hotel of any kind. Have you considered the Riviera Maya area instead of Cancun? Just based on reviews I’ve read, Cancun is more of the party scene while Riviera Maya is the more relaxing area. Just depends on what vibe you’re going for. When planning romantic vacations, I prefer adults only all inclusives. The quality of food and entertainment is also a huge priority.

El Dorado was the absolute worst resort I have ever been to.  Which was in rivier maya.  Besides that, I have no reviews.

I read lots of reviews. Didn’t look at anything under 4 stars, though I’m pretty sure we went with 5 stars. Only do adults only. I absolutely loved where we went for our honeymoon, which was my first time at an all inclusive.

I read through a ton of reviews and also looked at the Instagram location of the resorts to see people’s most recent pics at the resort to make sure it looked like that in real life. We went to Excellence Playa Mujeres for our honeymoon and LOVED it. It was amazing with food, room, pool, and beach. We just got back from another trip to Cancun at a much cheaper all inclusive to save money, and we definitely noticed the difference. We preferred the Excellence and will be going to those level of resorts from now on.

I would recommend a Secrets resort, like Secrets The Vine or Secrets Marina. We’ve been to 2 Secrets resorts (including for our honeymoon to the one in Los Cabos) and it is adults only and catered to couples (lots of honeymooners). Everything was exceptional to the food, service and room.

ilovelift :  I’d consider myself and my husband professionals when it comes to resorts in Cancun/RM at this point lol. We’ve been to 15 at this point I think?

What resort are you looking at booking??

We’ve stayed at places on all spectrums of the price point. We really only do adults only at this point, they tend to be a little nicer in nature (but not always, obvi). Our absolute questions are 1) adults only, 2) pool bar, and 3) a la cart lunch?

My husband is a picky eater so he likes having more options than just the buffet for lunch. Most nicer places have this option, cheaper options rarely do. Bonus points if you can order food pool side or bring it side (,cheaper options mostly prohibit this).

Also, keep in mind that the Riviera Maya is NOT Cancun, and does not have the same prestige bright blue waters. So if you want the breathe taking water, stay in the immediate Cancun hotel zone. We actually prefer the RM, it is much more relaxed, laid back, not ulta modern high rise and party atmosphere like Cancun. Resorts in Cancun are often like downtown hotel nice, RM has grounds that are more spread out and have a more authentic feel, lots of landscaping.

Finally, my suggestions. These are simply a list of our favorite resorts, for different reasons. All are adults only.

Live Aqua Cancun – super pricey and super modern, but amazing beach. Service is the best we’ve had, best pool side service. Great food options.

Valentin Imperial Maya – our hidden gem. Adults only but a little cheaper, but doesn’t lack in luxury! Best pool we’ve seen down here, beach is actually pretty good considering RM. Downside I think it only had the buffet for lunch. Super grand feeling to it.

Excellence Playa Mujeres – honeymooned here. Everything about it is great. Playa mujeres has much much better water than RM. It’s clear, just not bright blue  Highly highly recommend.

Secrets Akumal – amazing, fairly new resort. We love everything about Akumal in general!!! We love the Secrets resorts in general. Very nice, great service, the little details they pay attention to makes the difference.

Sun Palace Cancun – the facility is beautiful. It rained all but 1 day we were here so I cant speak much to the pool or anything. Food was very good, each room has it’s own private jacuzzi. In hotel zone so beautiful waters.

All of the Secrets brands are going to be great options, as well as Excellence.

ilovelift :  yes we have stayed there! This place had the BEST swim up room we have ever stayed in. I highly highly recommend it. The food was pretty dang good there. The beach right in front of the resort was not swimmable when we were there, but you just walk 2 minutes down the beach over to their sister resort right next door and it was a good! The only thing we didn’t like about the resort was that it was split in half. Idk how to explain it, they had the main road separating the 2 sides of the resorts, and the restaurants were on both sides. So you have to cross their driveway depending on where you want to eat, where your room is located, and which pool you wanted to be at. You will definitely have a great time there! And the resort itself was very nice.

For all inclusives, we always check how many restaurants the place has and the variety of food since you’ll be eating there all the time.  All inclusives sometimes water down the drinks, so ask for top shelf in your drinks, or an extra shot on the side, to make sure you actually get decent alcohol for your mixed drink.  Tip well from the beginning and they will take care of you.

Also, I have nixed resorts that do not seem to have enough beach umbrellas or shade.  The sun in Mexico and the Caribbean is strong, and if I have to fight for an umbrella, forget it.

We like Paradisus Cancun. We do Royal Service, but the regular resort is very nice!

Before I start planning the next trip, I always read travel forums, look for reviews and read a lot of articles and blogs in order to figure out what to expect. Just check some forums like TripAdvisor or Fodor’s Travel
