Maybe there was some kind of chemical or something on the carrots?  Allergic reactions can get bad very quickly so I would take some Benadryl fast and see if it stops the swelling.  Call your doc or go to the ER if it gets much worse!

I agree with rachel leigh – be very careful and go to the ER if things progress.  If your lip is only swelling in one spot, could it be something else?  Have you ever had a cold sore before?

I get this, with both raw apples and raw carrots. Occassionally other fruits as well.

My lips, tongue and throat go kind of tingly for a little while (longer the more I’ve eaten). It goes away for me on its own, and has never interfered with anything besides being annoying. I find drinking water to kind of flush it out of my mouth helps a bit (but feels weird, because of the numbness).

ETA: I did mean to ask too though, did you wash the carrots before eating them? Like the others have mentioned, its possible there was something on them.

@oracle: Even the “prewashed” ones you should always rinse off/wash. Carrots especially, because they’re a root, so they’re super porous and absorb everything!

A friend of mine once had a bottle of bleach in the same grocery bag as her carrots and it leaked a little bit. She didn’t realize it had gotten on the carrots, cooked and ate them, and ended up in the hospital overnight, with permanent stomach lining damage! Apparently, the carrots just sucked up the bleach like a sponge. ๐Ÿ™

@oracle: try seltzer water, if you have it. ๐Ÿ™‚ It usually goes away within 30 minutes for me.

ps – I’ve never met anyone else who gets tingly from apples/carrots. My husband thinks I’m making it up every time it happens. Of course, he thinks I’m a drama queen, hahaha.

Baby carrots are heavily processed, and there could have been something in this batch that you had a reaction to. Monitor it to see if anything gets worse. If not, I’d probably just avoid that brand. (I actually don’t eat baby carrots at all; I’ve heard crazy things about them being treated with chlorine after they’re peeled? I don’t know if it’s true, but I like my full-size carrots just fine. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@ddw:  I get that way with apple skins, but if I peel the apples and eat them sans skin, then I’m good.  Totally weird, but its fine cuz I can deal without eating the skin.

@oracle: Also, I didn’t mean to imply that you get cold sores!  I just know that the first time I got one I was like “what the hell is going on?”  I’m glad it’s not getting worse.
