Just wanted to get a “second opinion” from you girls. I bought my dress over a year ago at a trunk show. As part of the trunk show “discount” I was told that they would take my custom measurements, so that alterations, if any, would be minimal. They rushed me to buy my wedding shoes, and we took all of measurements, with my wedding shoes on. Fast forward several months later, and my entire dress has to be altered (including the length!!) because the measurements were all apparently taken too big. They quoted me $640-after the seamstress started cutting up my dress. I think this is insane, especially since they are charging $240 just to hem the dress, which should have the correct length to start!!! Any suggestions on how to handle this? I have a call placed to the owner and the alterations on hold, but my wedding is in 3 weeks!!!

Whoa now, are you kidding me?? $600 for alterations and $240 for a HEM?? What the heck? Is your dress made of gold or diamonds or something? At DB I was quoted $35 for a hem. The most expensive thing I saw for them was like $70 for a french bustle.
$600… no thank you! That’s more than my dress cost! Sorry, no clue how to handle this if they’ve already started and since the wedding is so close. 🙁

I think the high price tag may due to the timing. Is it possible that you can call a couple of other places to see if you can get a better price?

I would demand that they at least take up the hem, it was their mistake and they should rectify it!

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s crazy. The funny thing is that even though my dress is a mermaid style, it has no lace, no beadings, or anything. Just tulle underneath. You would think it would be easy!!

Yes, that’s excessive. Try to find some independent seamstresses today. I am going to my seamstress during the week so I can leave after work. Plus I have friends locally if I need a place to crash.
Check the boards as well as yelp for some options and start calling now. Its wedding season so I know ppl are trying to charge outrageous prices.
I’m in the OC unfortunately so I can’t give you any suggestions but I’m sure if you tried yelp and here, you’ll find someone.
