Well technically that is how I am doing mine, however the seamstress that will be doing my alterations is one of the ladies who works hand in hand with my bridal shop.  And my bridal shop is  a very very small place. So if my bridal shop trusts this seamstress to alter dresses, I am sure she will do a good job on mine.

@Mrs.tobe:  I’m nervous too!  I also bought the Adorae at Cincinnati Bridal and Formal, but since we decided on the fly to do this wedding thing, I have a VERY short timeline within which to get the dress in and get the alterations completed.  The dress should be here next week and then I’ve got to just bite the bullet and pick someone!  I don’t know much about alterations, but I feel like mine are going to be a challenge because my body is so disproportionate.  Nerrrrrrrrvous!  I’ll let you know how it goes.

I had to buy a second reception dress because the lady ruined the first one.  She took it in so much that I could not even zip it up.

Make sure you get references and see her work, I wish I had.

She should have a list of brides she has worked with and she should have more than one dress going, take a look at it.  Talk to the bridal shop to see if there have been any complaints.  If I had asked about complaints, it would have save me a whole dress.

I don’t know who from the pink list I’m going with just yet.  I’m spending all my time trying to find a reception venue I can actually afford instead.  My bridal consultant highly recommended “Pat next door”, as she did three of her daughters-in-laws dresses and they came out just fine.  Her only caveat is that Ms. Pat can be grumpy sometimes.  :^)  Not sure that’s much help for you since you’re quite a bit away.

In our smaller city I didn’t have a lot of choices, and no one to ask either.  We took it to the seamstress recommended by the store.  So nervous!!  Haha.  I’m supposed to get it back on the 16th.

Have you tried using yelp.com to see the seamstresses’ reviews? If she has good reviews you can probably trust her and if they are bad, you need to find a different one.
