Thankfully we’re still 2.5 months out, so we’re not in a crisis situation quite yet. Due to mental health taking precedence over physical health since I ordered my dress, I am now in a great place but the top of my dress is a couple inches from buttoning in the midsection/ribs area. It’s a ballgown, so thankfully there’s plenty of room in the hips and waist area.
I’m scheduling alterations, and wondering if anyone else had this happen and what your seamstress did? Obviously there might be some extra fabric to let out the midsection, potentially adding gussets on the sides and keeping the back, or maybe even throwing on a corset back if worst comes to worst. I just want to be prepared going in!

my seamstress let our my dress in the hips (my biggest measurement) so that i could sit, lol. she said there was a total of 3 inches to work with in my dress (Allure). of course, it varies by designer, but you can typically take it out at least 1 dress size, sometimes 2. so it depends how much your dress would need to be let out to make it fit.
and yes, you could always put in a corset in the case of an emergency (this would be preferable to adding side panels, imo)

Good to know!! This is MoriLee, but hopefully it’ll be the same. My thought with the side panels was that it could be a teeny bit of similar fabric under my arms that would essentially be invisible, as of course this is an illusion back that would ideally be kept.
But of course, in a perfect world dresses wouldn’t need to be altered at all. We’ll see what the seamstress thinks! Thanks!

I just went through the same thing…gained weight due to stress/anxiety issues. I just tried on my dress two weeks before my wedding! And realized it wouldn’t zip! My seamstress was able to let it out and it fits perfect! Don’t stress until you speak with her! They can usually let it out 1-2 sizes which it sounds like is what you need.

ahhh yeah an illusion back makes corsetting trickier. fingers crossed that between the seam allowance and some time, you can get it to fit perfectly!
