hey does anyone know if pickups can be altered to be more subtle?
for example —
i like how pickups give the dress more dimension and make it a little more interesting compared to a flat skirt, but im definitely not a fan of the overwhelming whipped cream look.
seems like a bunch of threads out there have the general consensus that pickups are out, but are people referring to the huge/dramatic ones or any pickups in general?

I really doubt you could take it that far, and if you did it would cost A LOT.

Sounds like you need to have a dress custom made

@annchopepper: Here’s a couple of pics of my dress with the pickups before alterations and then after. I had it taken in to be more fitted and I think it toned down the pickups a good bit. Excuse the crappy expression – I was in mid-sentence.sorry so small!

I actually purchased a dress with pick-ups (which I HATE) because I LOVED everything else about the dress (fabric, belt, corset and top). I really just want a very plain ballgown skirt. Oh yeah and the dress was discountinued and was $450.00. I talked to a tailor immeadiately and was told that they could be removed but how well it turns out will depend on several factors. The fabric, the amount of stitches in each pick-up and the number of pick-ups. That said, I am just curious as to why you would make such a HUGE change to the dress? You are not c=just taking out the pick-ups you are completely redesigning the skirt.

I like dresses with some pick-ups to give the dress some dimensions. // I’ve looked under my taffeta dress with pick-ups and the stitching looked knotted. (It might be because they stitched over the same area a few times.) I think that you might ruin the skirt by altering the pick-ups.

@annchopepper: I don’t like them, never have

Have you purchased a dress already that you want to alter? Otherwise I would just look for dress with subtle pick-ups. I have never liked pick-ups, but look at the dress I bought!

Though OP’s wedding has come and gone, if there are any others curious about this question, here’s Yahoo Answers to the rescue: general consensus = not advised.
And confirmed by another Bee thread.
