How about straw bales covered with blankets?  Someone mentioned in another post that there is a specific type that’s more for sitting on (less scratchy), but I can’t remember the name.  I think 2-3 people can sit on a bale comfortably.

I had a friend who recently go married on the beach.  Her solution was sheets that she got from TJ Max for cheap, and then her and her mom sewed a bunch of pillows which they gave out as favors.

What type of chairs and where are you renting?  Out here in LA you can rent white padded chairs at $1.50 each.

I’d keep looking for benches.  Hay doesn’t seem to fit a beach to me at all.  I like the sheets and pillows idea but I’d be worried about sitting in the sand in a dress as a female guest.

Are you set on the grass patch location? The reason I ask, I thouh that if you do it on the sand, you can have sand benches. You’d have to have someone do it a little ahead of time, but you can mold wet sand into chairs or benches and then cover them with towels or sheets? You could also do something like use crates topped with surf boards maybe?

When I think of beach seating I think of driftwood logs.

Are there any driftwood logs on that beach? If so, can you have  workparty to gather up enough of them to place in rows and use for seating?

The easiest way to move logs around if they are further down the beach is to roll them into the water, float them down to where you want them, then roll them up the beach to your desired location.

@mudgie1126: there is a company in Portland, ME called Leavitt & Parris that has benches. Also Rentals Unlimited (Boston, MA) has them.

The idea of wooden crates holding up surf boards is genius.
