I don’t like the idea of the garter toss at all and I know my fiance (who has never celebrated a Christian wedding before would disapprove as well). What we plan on doing instead is having a “break away toss” for the ladies and little girls where the bouquet will be untied and when thrown will break apart with more than one girl catching a flower. For the garter toss I had an idea that we would invite the children (there will be a lot attending our wedding) to the floor where my husband and I will each be holding a teddy bear (mine in a bridal gown and his in a tux) and throw them as luck symbols that the traditional garter would resemble. For the other children who did not catch a bear we will have smaller child appropriate wedding flavors so they are not so disappointed of not catching a bear. What do you think of this idea? Good? Or not so good?

I think that sounds cute, but you could also just NOT do a garter toss, and not feel obligated to replace it with anything. Or you could have a garter that is unworn and not retrieved from your thigh in front of guests, perhaps attaching a gift card or something to it so people actually want to catch it. We’re just skipping the tradition entirely.

Agree with the PP. It’s a cute idea. We’re skipping it all together.

We’re also skipping the garter toss. We’re not replacing it with anything.

i personally feel the garter toss is a little sleazy. cant understand why they have it for weddings.

Thank you for your feedback! 🙂 I will discuss it with my fiance and see what he thinks of it all. I just know that I definately do not want the garter toss at all. I think it is veri inappropriate. Thanks again! 🙂

We skipped the garter toss because we both thought it was super awkward :-P. We didn’t replace it with anything, but I think your idea sounds really cute, especially if there will be a lot of kids there.

I’m going to wear a garter for my new husband, but definitely NOT doing the toss! We’re also going to skip the bouquet toss…

@meg0967: we didnt do a garter or boquet toss either. Instead i had a garter with lottery tickets and scratchies attached to it and a silk boquet with lottery tickets attached to that. Darling Husband threw the flowers to any guy who “wanted to get lucky that night” and i did the same for the women.
It was a hit!

I think we are skipping too, I do like the breakaway though
