We had a “cocktail hour” where we served hot chocolate, hot apple cider, coffee and tea (winter wedding). We also had s’mores and maple taffy on snow. The s’mores were a HUGE hit!

If you do a first look, you won’t really need a coctail hour as all your photographs will be taken before the wedding  This would allow you to skip coctails entirely and go straight to the dinner reception after the ceremony.  If you are against the first look session and still want to take photos after the cernmony you might have a problem.  guests waiting for an hour or more need some kind of refreshment/ entertainment.  You could probably do coffee, lemonade,  and tea for cheap and hand out organza bags of trail mix, beef jerky, or little cookies as favors.  Then maybe have some music, a slide show, a magician…something to keep your guests occupied

We are having lawn games (board games if it rains) but we are also serving apps and drinks.

I don’t think you need a cocktail hour, but I’m not sure what you are thinking. Are you talking about having a hour before everyone is seated for dinner, but without food/drink? If so, I would just say skip it.

@Bunny:  what about food favors; candies and cookies? People do this all the time.

I think if it’s really only half an hour then as long as you have beverages (even non-alcoholic) that it could take 100 people that long to get their table numbers, sign your guest book, find their seats, get their first round of beverages poured at the tables, etc…

In fact your post just made me think I could really cut costs in this area… 🙂
