So my fiancé isn’t a big fan of wedding discos and would happily avoid the idea of a reception if possible, but I would like to have somewhere for an evening do for guests. Any suggestions on alternatives? I’d still like my first dance and a dance with my dad, any ideas out there?
PS – we only got engaged last month so no date has been made yet or anything, just trying to come up with ideas before we look for venues etc. We will probably have a relatively long engagement – we’re together 5 years this October (basically living together the entire time) and expect to marry in 2017 most likely.

wokeupnew: I wouldn’t skip the reception…but that doesn’t mean that your reception has to be traditional, either. Two thoughts for you: 1) it’ll be easier to pull off a no-dance reception if your wedding is earlier (like brunch or early afternoon reception)…plus it can be much more affordable! 2) just because there is music/dancing doesn’t mean that your fiance (then-husband!) has to show off his moves. A few of our friends recently got married and their top regret is that they hardly had a chance to dance at all because they were talking to guests all evening long.
This thread has a pretty good discussion (on both sides of the issue–some bees are apparently very against not having dancing) about this:
Alternatives to Dancing @ Reception?
