We are trying to figure out what kind of entertainment we want at our wedding reception. I know the usual thing to do is hire a DJ and have dancing, but neither of our families are particularly ‘dancey’. So I have a feeling a DJ would be a waste.
Instead of a DJ we are thinking of hiring a live band/duo to do the music – there’s a different quality to watching live performers than listening to a DJ I think.
Does anybody have any other ideas of other entertainment options we could do? Or alternatives to a DJ that wouldn’t cost as much for us?

We had music from the computer and rented speakers. We also brought some games b/c it was supposed to be pretty nasty weather, plus a football and frisbee in case it was nice. The two latter got a little use before the rains came in. No one touched the games. Honestly everyone seemed really happy to just hang out, eat food and chat with each other.
One of my cousins had a bluegrass fiddler for his wedding ceremony, which I really enjoyed. My bestie brought someone in who knew how to dance and taught people a few dances to get them on the floor – foxtrot, waltz, stuff like that. Aside from the ubiquitous photobooth of recent weddings, I haven’t seen anything else unique.
I feel like watching a live performer would keep people from being able to socialize – I’d feel rude chatting while a soloist is singing or a band is playing specific songs, you know? And that would ruin my wedding fun as I enjoy that aspect the most.
