@NJmeetsBX: I wouldn’t hire someone who is most comfortable with photojournalism if the formals are really really important to you. Photogs who are truly wedding photojournalists hate doing formals and are better suited for those couples who are really just doing formals because the couple knows their parents and grandparents want them. That’s how it is with the vast majority of my clients – they want it over as quickly as possible and I’m happy to oblige. 🙂 If formals are important to you, find a photographer who does them they way you like them. You can send inspiration photos too, of course, but I feel like you might be setting yourself up for some disappointment if they fall short of your expectations.

I don’t think you’re paranoid. He is not going to morph into another photog just for formals even if he may be mostly able to cater to your wants. Is it about how he’s positioning the people for group portraits?

All that said, are formals really important to you? I still haven’t narrowed mine down to my favorites because I care about them the least (by far). So if I were in your shoes I’d be ok with the photogs formal portrait style not being perfect for me. We only took them for our parents sake.

@NJmeetsBX: haha it may be the blogs. I think you’re ok going with him then. Maybe scope out a good location for formals ahead of time that will encourage his creativity?

I’m wondering if your photographer is my photographer…

Formals are.. well formal. Usually there is not too much creativity there. That being said, you are a paying customer, so it is not ‘too picky’ to let your photographer know the style you like and show them examples that you like.

Well as a photographer for actual formals I would say we all pose the same to save time or else you will be there for hours. However I try to get a nice background to make them look better.

For bridal party I definitely get a few more fun pictures. I would be worried if there are no good photos of the bridal party!

Honestly, I would never look at someone who lacks in formals or anything. They may be good at photojournalism and that’s great, but that is completely different from doing a wedding. I’d find someone who is amazing with doing weddings because you dont want to be dissapointed by your photographer because after all, you knew he was not good at it.
