Boyfriend or Best Friend and I have been together almost 2 years, living together for 7 months. We are talking wedding – we’ve been pricing venues, asking who would actually travel for a destination wedding (in Scotland), looking at dates for summer 2013. We are not engaged yet but we do have romantic trips planned for mid-August and for Columbus Day weekend.
I’m a teacher – once August 22 hits, my life gets really busy. Would it be a really bad idea to start dress shopping?

Personally I would give it a little time. I’m also a teacher so I know how that goes but I did all my wedding planning during the school year actually, and I would still give it a little time.

@oceanheather: I personally think so. You don’t have to wait for a ring, but definitely wait for the go ahead from your SO. It would suck to find the one and not be able to go ahead and buy it. You also don’t have a date set or a venue, so you’re vision may change and you’d hate for your dress to not match down the road. Feel free to browse online, though! ^_^

Wait until you have a venue as it may influence your choice of dress dramatically.

I wait until you have a proposal, venue and date. The venue and date will have a big impact on the dress you choose and you’ll want to wait until after the propsal so you can bring friends/family members to help (they’ll think your jumping the gun without a proposal).
That doesn’t mean you can’t look at dress websites or magazines to pick out ones you like though.

My first instinct is YES!! There are approximately 8,533,243 threads on here about dress regret. Not all, but many of them are from brides who have the wedding change significantly from their original vision. So I definatley wouldn’t buy a dress until you’re sure of a date (or at least a season) and a venue. However, if you are the type that has really really good will power, and you know that you can say no to buying a dress, then it might be okay to try on some dresses and figure out what silouhette you like best. But if you think you’re going to fall in love and it’s a sample dress and it’s a great deal… so you buy it – then don’t even go in the store!

I would wait until you have the venue, I am marrying in Scotland also and the venue we chose (a castle) drastically dictated the choice of dress I decided on buying. If your not looking until next summer you still have time for that Ring to arrive and then to plan your dress 🙂

Wait. Too long between buying and wearing = high probability of dress regret. Plus knowing your venue makes a huge difference, and so does actually being engaged.

So the dress I’m buying takes 9 months to come in. I would say start shopping online at the very least, and picking out styles you like. Depending on designer, the time frame might be fairly tight depending on how early next summer you choose compared to when you get engaged.
