I would wait a little longer. 2 years is still a lot of time and your minds could change easily in that time. Just enjoy being engaged!

Too early as the size of your guest list or your personal tastes could change a lot in the next 2 years.

Defeinitely wait a bit. The earliest I would start looking would be about 14-15 months before the wedding, but definitely book soon after that.

that might be a little early, but i will tell you that when we went to look at my dream venue in CT in january 2012, they were already book for every saturday and almost every friday in june 2013. they had 2 days to pick from, neither of which really worked for us, and in the week we spent debating, one of those days got booked up too…

I think there is no harm in doing your research. Especially since you’ll be looking at venues far and wide to find the right one… plus there is a good chance you’ll be able to see what it looks like in the season, month, or even day that you are having your wedding.

For me the venue informed a lot of the other decisions I made, and it’s definitely the biggest portion of the budget. If you discover your dream venue ups your budget by $5000, you have time between now and then to work a part time job, etc…

So, I guess I’m saying go for it! (But wait on your dress!)

FWIW, I’m having a 1 1/2 year engagement, and we have decided on venue, videographer, and photographer, but I’m waiting until September to work on “the look” of the wedding and my wedding party. Just in case things change.

It depends on what kind of venue you’re looking for. If it’s a highly competitive one, then you should start looking now.  I don’t think it’s a problem to start looking at venues.

@PaisleyMedic:  it’s definitely a concern. the woman at the venue i am talking about told me that November 2011 was when things really started picking up for the summer of 2013… so like a year and a half ish? according to her a lot of people get engaged around thanksgiving, so if you beat the thanksgiving rush you should be ok!

we ended up signing a contract on our reception venue in march 2012 for june 2013 and had a reasonable choice of dates but also it was close enough that we had a real feel for what we wanted the size of our wedding to be.

it’s def a tough balancing act!

I’m going against the grain here and tell you if you want to, you should start looking.  Fiance and I went to look at our first venue today for an October 2014 wedding and she said they already had 4 dates booked for September 2014.  I do live in a “snooze ya lose” sort of area and the venue is one of the most important parts of our wedding so we are not going to wait.  We have a very solid idea of our guest numbers and that will not be changing so I say if you have a good idea of what you need, go for it!

Go ahead and start looking!  It wont do any harm to find out all your potential options…plus, the more time you look, the more likey you’ll find a great place with a great deal that you might not consider if you had limited time.  I wouldn’t necessarily book right now…ask them how far in advance they typically start booking, and then aim for that!  Plus, its fun to start planning a little when the pressure is not on 🙂  Enjoy your long engagement…but don’t let planning consume you for a full two years—you’ll go crazy and your Fiance might flip a lid too hearing about it for a solid 2 years!  hahah

Congrats!!!!

We booked our venue 23 months ahead! Booked it in Sept 2011 and our wedding is August 2013! It was also the ONLY venue I looked at. When you know you know, so there is definitely no harm in starting your search and if you both happen to come across something you both LOVE and feel confident about it then do what you want, it is your wedding after all. 🙂

I got engaged Christmas Eve 2010 and booked my venue in June 2011.  We found out that our weekend was the last one available in October 2012.  =) We, unfortuantely, lost our deposit though because we decided a big wedding wasn’t in our plans after some financial struggles.

If you want to look now, there’s no harm in that. I started looking about 2 years before myself. But I highly recommend don’t book until at least 18 months in advance. That’s what I did, and I’m happy I got it booked because it was the most stressful decision to date trying to decide where the wedding would be.
