@Pinksapphire: You say you’ve considered just immediate family, but why not go through with it? It would actually be easier for you to explain to people that it’s a family-only event because it explains very easily why they weren’t invited. Your wedding should make you excited, not anxious; plenty of people have intimate weddings and are very happy with their decision. 🙂

@brideatbeach: agree.

It sounds like in your case immediate family only is a much better option.

Also I did a semi-destination wedding, we invited a little over 200 people and had a little over 100 people come so it is possible to get the number you want but not guaranteed.

Money = Power.  Therefore, if someone is contributing $0.00 to the wedding, then they have 000 say.  It’s hard for people like FMIL’s to understand (trust me, I come with a LOT of Mother-In-Law baggage myself), but that’s the equation, and you have every right to stick to it.  IF she is paying for their plates, THEN they can be added to the guest list.  OR…just say, I’m sorry, but I’ve dreamt of an intimate wedding all my life, and while we would love to open it up to extended family, that’s just not what is within our desires or means.  You could also blame it on space limitations!! That’s a good one! 🙂

Best of luck on planning…we too are *hoping* lots don’t show up as well (of COURSE, we’d like everyone to attend, HOWEVER, our estimated numbers are counting on people not showing up.)  Here’s to hoping that the people who mean the most show, and those that were invited more out of obligation, do not! 🙂 haha (that sounds harsh, but I hope you know what I mean!!)

@Pinksapphire:FH and I were in the exact same boat a few weeks ago, we’re doing a small Destination Wedding and had our fingers crossed that half our guest list wouldn’t be able to make it. Can you do a cursory verbal confirmation to see who is able to make it and go from there? Is there any way that Fiance can talk to her about some of your shared concerns to cut down on the awkward factor?

Pshh you are NOT crazy at all because I think all of us that are planning Destination Wedding are having issues…I have a minor meltdown at least once a week because something else has to be changed or guests change thier mind about coming, and how am I suppossed to plan my it exactly how I want it from so far away and only go off of the few pics that are shown on the website?? And now I’m stressing myself out LOL But similiar to your situation I only wanted people that I REALLY cared about with us at the wedding and now theres people coming that I have barely even met! Granted theres still only like 18 people coming but it does make a difference.  I hope you get your way and SOON so you don’t have to worry about it! Smile
