@a_marie13:  Of course you can do one without the other.

A bunch of single girls catching a bouquet = fun

A bunch of single guys catching a piece of the bride’s underwear = demeaning

In some parts of the world (including USA I believe) they go together because of a tradition that the garter catcher dances with the bouquet catcher. This is a really messed up tradition and I strongly urge you not to do it. A while ago there was a thread on embarassing wedding moments, and a large proportion of these were along the lines of “Teenage girl catches bouquet and is forced to dance with groom’s creepy 30 year old cousin”.

EDIT: Oh wait, I think some were even worse,  “Teenage girl catches bouquet and is forced let groom’s creepy 30 year old cousin put garter on her leg while everyone watches”.

My Fiance has a sick sense of humor, he says not cool.

I hope you two find a good compromise. Surely this is not a hill he wants to die on…

What’s supposed to be funny about that? I’d never let him do it; you are so not overreacting!

wow, that’s a bit rude of him to want that.

i asked my dh what he thought of this. (for a guy’s pov)

he thought that was disgusting and disrespectful to the bride.  not all guests would find this amusing.

I have the most fucked up sense of humor and I don’t think this is funny at all.  I would be pissed.

Ummmm… No I dont think I’d let my husband insinuate I have vaginal odor on my wedding day.  Or really bad farts??

I don’t think you’re overreacting at all, that sounds TERRIBLE!  There’s a way to do funny while keeping it classy.  A friend of mine stuck his entire head under his bride’s dress “searching” for the garter with a fun song playing in the background, all while she got to giggle and maintain some elegance…the way he did it was hilarious and we all thought it was so cute.

The garter removal is such a cheeky moment anyway, there’s no need to pile on the embarrassment.  I would approach him after the two of you have calmed down a bit and explain to him exactly what you’ve told all of us:  That even though he thinks it’s funny, it’s degrading to you and you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed at the thought of all your loved ones watching as he implies you’re less than fresh down there.  Ask if he’s willing to spend time looking for a song that’s fun but doesn’t make you feel icky, and stress that it’s something that’s important to you.  As long as you guys have good communication skills, I’m thinking he’ll understand and compromise.  Good luck!

I read about a groom hiding a bag of things under the dress and pulling them out one by one to make it a bit funny. Like a rubber chicken, huge pair of granny panties etc.

Maybe he could do something like that? I would be embarassed at the smell idea too!
