Right now is the time to secure your venue, start gathering ideas for EVERYTHING and keep an idea binder, and interviewing caterers, florist, cake bakers, etc. that way once your ready to start the heavy part of the planning you know what direction your headed. Let the venue give you clues for a direction if you have no idea where to begin. For example is the venue formal or plain; victorian or art deco or modern; what colors are used in the rooms. Hopefully this gets you out of planning parties for others and gets you planning your big day. Hope it helps.

From 10 months out to 9 months out, here is what I got accomplished:

-purchased wedding rings (FH & mine)
-picked color scheme
-choose Bridesmaid or Best Man style/ color dress-reserved ceremony/ reception venue (includes officiant)
-made all important decisions re: length of reception, location of ceremony, bar options, menu options, approx number of guests, etc
-reserved florist, picked out flowers & placed order
-ordered elephant bouquet charm
-decided on & ordered cake
-ordered cake topper
-picked out cake knife and server set (ordering tomorrow)
-tried on wedding dresses
-picked out and ordered Save-The-Date Cards, invitations, RSVPs and Thank You cards
-purchased Guestbook Platter (for parents and Bridal Party to sign)
-purchased frame for guestbook table
-picked out 1 Bridesmaid or Best Man gift (ordering tomorrow)
-chose make up & hair stylist
-got an idea re: photographer (still have to meet with her)

(I’m sure there’s more but you get the point. Also, I’m only working part time right now so that’s why I had the time to do all that.) The only thing I did during this time that I am changing my mind on was order my wedding dress. However I don’t think I’m changing my mind because I ordered it too early– I’m changing my mind because I don’t like the dress anymore. And I’m glad I did it ahead of time, so now I have time to pick something else out (and exchange original dress) without having to rush.

The reason I have been getting so much stuff done so early is that school starts for me on Monday and I know I will have very little time to even think about the wedding this semester, and right after this semester is Christmas. So I’ll have part of January, then my spring semester will start up right away. My wedding is THREE DAYS after school lets out for the summer… So it made sense for me to do all I could this summer so I don’t have to worry about it during school.

Point being that there are plenty of things you can do now– just once you make a decision, stick with it and don’t keep thinking about it.

I never even saw 10 months out, since I had a short engagement, but I would think that’s definitely not too early to book venue/dj/photographer if you haven’t already.  You could probably get a fairly solid idea of colours etc. and think about linen rentals if you’re going to go in that direction.  If you rent, there’s not usually a huge penalty if you change your mind.

Sometimes you just need to pick a couple things, and everything else will fall into place from there.
