I am probably a little biased, but why not book your honeymoon with a travel agent so that you don’t have to pay the whole thing all at once?

Whenever you get an answer that you don’t like from someone on the phone at these companies, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask to speak to a supervisor.  There is always someone there who can do more than the computer says.

I would suggest checking out a travel agent if the overpaying does not work. We priced out our honeymoon online and the travel agent (AAA, I know not Canadian)came in with the same price plus she had access to flights we couldn’t book through orbitz or travelocity or anything online at hte same price point. I also worked in the travel industry and generally thought I’d never use travel agents but there was no increased cost and we only had to pay flights and hte deposit up front which would really help your AMEX situation.

I’m very sorry you’re having trouble with AMEX.  I too have beef with them.  They’re traveler’s checks used to be accepted world-wide, and now they’re nearly impossible to cash (outside of a US bank, anyway).  Grrrr.

I would also suggest overpaying by the difference rather than going over your credit limit.  Yes, it’s just a slight ding on your credit score but it shows up on your credit history.  Even though it’s minor, future credit cards (and current ones) can use this as a “reason” to deny you a new credit card or even cancel your current credit card.  Not fair but true.

Overpaying works just fine, I do it all the time with my AMEX.
